Gibson lands 20 kills, Parra records first double-double as Frogs fall to CCU
CONWAY, S.C. – TCU lost the Coastal Carolina Tournament opener to the Chanticleers, 3-1, on Thursday night at the HTC Center.
Jalyn Gibson posted a career-high 20 kills while also adding 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Melanie Parra continued her successful first season with the Horned Frogs with her first career double-double (19 kills, 10 assists).
The Rundown
Jalyn Gibson landed four kills early in the first set to give TCU an 7-6 lead. The first frame went back-and-forth the entire time, with 19 tied scores and eight lead changes.
TCU matched Coastal point-for-point and with a kill from Melanie Parra, the Horned Frogs took a 28-27 lead before the Chanticleers went on a 3-0 scoring run to take the set.
Despite trailing 2-0 after the second set, TCU rallied and put on a show in the third. Audrey Nalls, who was sidelined both games of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge due to injury, landed 12 kills in her first game back which included a team-best six kills in the third set alone. TCU took an early 2-1 lead thanks to two of Nalls' kills to start the set.
The Frogs led by as many as six points on two separate occasions in the third set as they hit .323 compared to Coastal's .114. Parra and Gibson tallied four kills apiece to lead the Frogs to a 25-22 victory.
The fourth set was back-and-forth in the early part of the frame. Gibson's first of four kills in the set gave TCU its first point and the Frogs stayed even with the Chanticleers. A Coastal service error tied the match up at 12-12, but the Chanticleers went on a 8-1 scoring run to take a 20-13 lead and never looked back.
Parra recorded her first career double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs. Her 19 kills were a career-best and it was her first double-digit dig effort of the year.
Gibson tallied her second double-double of the season with a team-leading and career-best 20 kills. She also added 11 digs.
