Byrne and Maxwell each homer and drive in five
FORT WORTH – TCU wrapped up a stretch of four games in four days with a 14-4 seven-inning win over UTRGV on Tuesday night. Kurtis Byrne and Logan Maxwell homered in the game and drove in five each to lead the Horned Frogs offensively.
The Rundown
A hit batter followed by three walks had the Horned Frogs off and running in the first. A double play ball brought home the second run of the inning and Kurtis Byrne followed with a two-out single to make it a 3-0 ballgame after one.
Six more runs crossed the plate in the second as the lead grew to 9-0. Anthony Silva's two-out single drove in Elijah Nunez to start the scoring. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and walk drove in two more. Logan Maxwell delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double.
After UTRGV got on the board in the fourth, TCU had an answer in the form of Maxwell's two run home run in the bottom of the inning to make it an 11-1 ballgame. TCU added a run on a Byrne double in the fifth.
UTRGV picked up a trio of runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 12-4 ballgame. Hunter Hodges minimized the damage as he got an inning-ending double play ball with the bases loaded.
Byrne's two run home run walked off the 10-run victory in the seventh.
Braeden Sloan started for TCU and allowed a run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked just one. Jax Traeger (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, recording the final out of the fourth and stranding two base runners. Hodges pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit, walking three and striking out one.
