FORT WORTH – Recently hired head women's basketball coach Mark Campbell brought two key pieces of his staff at Sacramento State to TCU with the hiring of Xavier Lopez as associate head coach and Minyon Moore as assistant coach.
Lopez, who goes by "Xavi" (Cha-vee) served on Campbell's staff at Sac State for two years as an associate head coach and alongside Campbell for seven years at Oregon, including the last four as an assistant coach.
"I am thrilled to have Xavi as my associate head coach," said Campbell. "With an incredible network overseas, he is the best international recruiter in women's basketball. Xavi has an incredible basketball mind that sees the offensive game in a unique way, but more importantly, he is a relationship builder. He will be a great mentor to these young women."
Over the past two seasons at Sac State, Lopez oversaw the spread pick-n-roll, which was one of the most efficient offenses in college basketball last season. The Hornets finished 10th nationally in field goal percentage (46.5) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (38.5).
At Oregon, Lopez assisted with scouting and recruiting, including leading the Ducks' international recruiting efforts. Under his watch, the Ducks were able to recruit Germany's Satou Sabally, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, and Spain's Maite Cazorla, the 23rd overall pick in 2019, to Eugene.
Lopez also worked directly with the Oregon guards, overseeing a squad that led the nation in 3-point shooting in 2018-19, hitting 41.5 percent of its 3-point attempts, while ranking fourth in overall shooting at 50.1 percent.
Lopez played professionally in Spain for six years for the Bilbao Basket in the prestigious ACB Spanish League, among other clubs.
Moore, whose first name is pronounced "min-yawn," also served on staff at Sac State for two years as an assistant coach. Lopez and Moore assisted Campbell in leading Sac State to a school record 25 wins and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Hornets won a share of their first Big Sky regular season championship and first Big Sky Tournament title. The 25 victories marked the first 20-win season in program history and were also the most ever by a Sacramento State men's or women's basketball team.
"I am very excited to have Minyon on our coaching staff," said Campbell. "She is an elite recruiter and relationship builder. Minyon did an incredible job overseeing our defensive scheme at Sac State, which helped us have the best season in program history."
Moore is a three-time member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team while playing three years at USC and the final season at Oregon for the 2019-20 season. While in Eugene and playing for Campbell, Moore helped lead the Ducks to a sweep of the Pac-12 regular season and tournament titles. She was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive team for the third time in her career. Moore was also part of a dominant Ducks team that seemed destined for a national championship before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
"Minyon is a gifted communicator and is going to be an incredible mentor to our players," said Campbell. "Minyon will work with the guards and played a huge role in helping Lianna Tillman and Khalaijah Dean be named Big Sky Player of the Year."
