Parra’s the first TCU player in history to be named to one of the three All-American teams
FORT WORTH – Melanie Parra capped off her historic season by being named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Third Team All-American.
Parra, who earned the first AVCA All-American nod for the Horned Frogs since 2016, is the first player in program history to be named to one of the three AVCA All-American teams. Previously, five Horned Frogs have garnered All-American Honorable Mention honors.
She's the sixth TCU player to earn AVCA All-American honors and the third in the Big 12 Era.
The unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection ranked 12th in the NCAA in points per set (5.17) and 17th with 4.38 kills per set. No stranger to AVCA recognition, Parra earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 19) after recording 34 kills in TCU's 3-1 win over Florida State. Her 34 kills broke the four-set school record and are also the second-most kills in a single match in program history.
A two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Parra earned her second weekly honor on Oct. 3 after she tallied 34 kills once again in TCU's 3-2 win over Texas Tech (Sept. 29). She became the first player in program history to record two 34-kill matches in her career. She also broke the single-match point record with 39.5 points against the Red Raiders.
The Sinaloa, Mexico, recorded a team-leading 13 double-doubles on the season, including a double-double in both NCAA Tournament matches this season for the Frogs. Starting in 29 matches this season, Parra tallied 10+ kills in 23 matches this season. She also recorded 20+ kills in eight matches, including the first 20-kill match of her career when she went for 27 kills at a .453 clip in TCU's 3-1 win over Hawai'i (Sept. 14).
Parra's 569 points on the season is the new single-season school record for total points. She also ranks fourth on TCU's single-season records list with 482 total kills. Additionally, Parra's 4.38 kills per set is tied for third in TCU history and her 0.44 aces per set is also fourth in program history.
She led the Horned Frogs to their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Parra led TCU with 23 kills and added 11 digs in TCU's first round win over No. 22 Florida State. It's just the second time in school history that TCU has advanced to consecutive Round of 32 matches.
