Is the second player in program history to reach the finale
SAN DIEGO – Jack Pinnington is in a class of his own in the annals of TCU men's tennis.
Pinnington became just the second player in the 49-year history of the program to qualify for an ITA singles national championship on Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The sophomore punched his ticket to the ITA National Fall Championships singles final behind a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback victory over Ohio State's 81st-ranked Jack Anthrop in the semifinals.
Pinnington, No. 26 in the ITA singles rankings, is the first Horned Frog to play for a national singles championship since David Pate won the men's national fall championship in 1982.
He'll face No. 17 Micah Braswell of Texas at 2 p.m. on Sunday in an all-Lone Star State battle.
Pinnington is 2-0 against Braswell, a senior. He secured the second point in TCU's 4-0 ITA Indoor National Championship win over the Longhorns on Feb. 20, defeating Braswell 6-4, 6-0. Pinnington again got the better of Braswell, this time by a 6-3, 6-1 margin, on March 22 in a nonconference clash between the teams. Both matches were contested on court three.
TCU narrowly missed out on playing for its second consecutive ITA National Fall Championships doubles title on Saturday. No. 13 Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives suffered a semifinal upset at the hands of Conner and Codie Van Schalkwyk, 7-6 [7-2], 6-4.
Gorzny and Vives' run to the semifinals marked the third straight year TCU has placed a doubles tandem in the final four of the grand finale of fall tennis. The duo concludes the fall season with a 10-3 record as partners and in possession of the ITA Texas Regional championship. Gorzny and Vives are now 30-10 when paired together.
