FORT WORTH – TCU volleyball bolstered an already deep nucleus at outside hitter on Friday, as head coach Jason Williams announced the signing of University of Texas transfer Melanie Parra to the Horned Frogs 2023 roster.
Parra, 5-11, played two seasons for the Longhorns from 2021-2022. She brings a championship pedigree north from Austin and from her native Culiacán, Mexico. Parra helped Texas capture the 2022 NCAA Volleyball Championship in December. Prior to arriving in the United States, she was a member of the Senior Mexican National Team in 2018. Parra first received international acclaim as a teenager, as she earned a call-up to the U-18 Mexican National Team as a 13-year-old in 2013.
Parra will be a junior and have three years to play two seasons for the Horned Frogs.
Her arrival adds a versatile dimension to TCU's stable of outside hitters. Parra often played all six rotations for the Longhorns. She tallied 192 digs, 93 kills, 68 service aces and 15 blocks across 59 matches played over her three-year run in the Capital City.
Parra appeared in 21-of-29 matches on Texas' championship-winning squad last fall. She delivered her top-two collegiate offensive performances during nonconference play. Parra landed a career-high 15 kills in a sweep of UC Davis on Sept. 7. She again hit double digits in kills eight days later in a four-set win over Houston, tallying 12 kills against a career-best .476 hitting percentage.
She etched her name onto the Longhorns' program record book as a freshman in 2021. Parra led the Longhorns with 60 service aces and averaged 0.61 aces per set to notch a single-season school record. She also finished fourth on the team in digs (158).
Her first international championship experience arrived in 2018, when she competed for the Senior Mexican National Team at the 2018 FIVB World Championship. Parra went on to help the Mexican National Team place fourth in the Central American and Caribbean Games that same year.
Parra's stint on the Senior Mexican National Team was the apex of rapid ascension through the international ranks.
She represented her home state of Sinaloa in a nationwide tournament at age-12. Parra earned a spot on the U-18 Mexican National Team the following year.
In 2016, she helped Mexico to a bronze medal at the U18 NORCECA Volleyball Championship in Puerto Rico.
She then guided the Mexican National Team to a first-place finish in its pool at the 2017 NORCECA Volleyball Championships in 2017.
Parra's addition bolsters a TCU program that is slated to return six of the pin hitters listed on its 2022 roster and retain 97 percent of its scoring (960-987 kills) from the position group.
She is the second Power Five conference transfer TCU has inked in the last three weeks. TCU previously publicized the signing of Missouri setter Riley Buckley on Dec. 22.
The Horned Frogs anticipate announcing their complete 2023 recruiting class in the coming weeks.
