
TCU Drops Heartbreaker Friday Night

FORT WORTH – A chaotic ninth saw West Virginia steal a 3-2 victory over TCU Friday night at Lupton Stadium. The Horned Frogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't find the hit they needed.
The Rundown
Down to its final strike with two runners in scoring position, West Virginia's Ben Abernathy broke for home and was safe after dislodging the ball from the glove. The runner from second never stopped and slid in ahead of the tag to put the Mountaineers in front, 3-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, TCU loaded the bases on a trio of walks, but couldn't get the tying run home.
The Frogs opened up the scoring in the first with a run on three hits. David Bishop doubled with two outs and scored on a Gray Rodgers base hit.
Riley Cornelio held the Mountaineers at bay through the first five innings, allowing just three base runners. A one-out single followed by two stolen bases in the sixth put the tying run at third with two outs. A wild pitch tied the game at one.
TCU retook the lead in the seventh after a lead-off walk to Kurtis Byrne. A wild pitch followed by a passed ball put the Frogs in front 2-1.
Cornelio was outstanding in making his third straight series-opening start. He allowed just the one run on two hits, walked three and struck out a career-high eight. Luke Savage turned in two scoreless innings of relief. River Ridings (2-1) took the loss after surrendering the two ninth inning runs on two hits. He struck out two.
