SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – TCU excelled in all three phases of the game en route to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Houston in its final game of the MLB4 Tournament. Brett Walker turned in 6 2/3 scoreless frames and the offense was highlighted by Reed Spenrath's four RBIs. Brayden Taylor and Tommy Sacco each tallied three hits in the win.
The Rundown
Brett Walker (1-0) was outstanding in his TCU debut. The graduate transfer twirled 6 2/3 shutout innings. He scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out five. Twice, he induced inning-ending 643 double plays to keep the Cougars off the bases.
The offense provided Walker with plenty of offense early in the game. Five free passes in the first led to a pair of runs for TCU. Gray Rodgers and Reed Spenrath drew bases-loaded walks to drive in the game's first runs.
In the second, TCU's bats came to life as it tacked on two more runs to open up a 4-0 lead. Elijah Nunez started the hit parade with one out. Following a base knock from Luke Boyers, Brayden Taylor made it 3-0 with a hit to center. David Bishop capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Tommy Sacco doubled to lead off the third and scored on Spenrath's first hit of the season for a 5-0 advantage.
TCU added a run in the seventh and four in the eighth to complete the run-rule victory. Kurtis Bryne singled home the run in the seventh. Bishop collected his second RBI for the first run in the eighth. A bases-loaded wild pitch followed by a Spenrath two-run single ended the game.
Marcelo Perez came on in the seventh with the bases loaded and get the final out of the frame. Garrett Wright pitched a scoreless eighth.
