TCU duo recognized by the nation's head coaches
WACO, Texas -- The American Football Coaches Association has selected TCU offensive guard Steve Avila as a First-Team All-American with cornerback Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson on the second team.
The duo has helped lead TCU to its first College Football Playoff appearance with a 12-1 record, including a 9-0 Big 12 regular season. The No. 3 Horned Frogs will face No. 2 Michigan in the Dec. 31 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
Avila, also a Walter Camp and Football Writers Association of America First-Team All-American as well as an Outland Trophy Semifinalist, is a Team Captain and anchor of an offensive line that paves the way for one of the nation's most prolific offensive attacks. He has started all 13 games this season. The First-Team All-Big 12 selection was also Honorable-Mention Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. He has not allowed a sack in 477 pass blocking snaps this season.
The Horned Frogs rank among the FBS leaders in all major offensive categories and lead the nation with 19 plays of 50-plus yards while placing second with 10 plays of at least 60 yards. TCU is tied for the FBS lead with 13 offensive touchdowns of at least 50 yards. The Horned Frogs are also one of only two teams nationally averaging at least 270 yards per game passing, 200 rushing and have at least 30 passing and 30 rushing touchdowns.
The 2022 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation's top defensive back, Hodges-Tomlinson also earned All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press and Sporting News.
Hodges-Tomlinson was First-Team All-Big 12 for the third consecutive season and Honorable-Mention Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He allowed a 38.9 passer rating this season, the best among cornerbacks in the Big 12, and took part in a takeaway in four consecutive games with three picks and a forced fumble. He had an interception and three pass breakups as TCU held Texas to no offensive touchdowns and just 199 yards of offense in a 17-10 win in Austin. For the season, he totaled 42 tackles, including two for loss, with three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and a forced fumble.
