SAN DIEGO – Sander Jong and Lui Maxted made TCU tennis history on Saturday, becoming the first Horned Frog doubles tandem to advance to the finals of the ITA National Fall Championships.
Jong and Maxted, seeded third in the 32-team bracket, took out Utah's Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, in the semifinals of fall tennis' grand finale, held at the Barnes Tennis Center.
They'll battle the tournament's No. 4 seed, JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschaunig of Ohio State, at noon CT on Sunday for all the marbles. The Buckeye pairing knocked out Baylor's Finn Bass and Juan Pablo 6-4, 3-6, [10-7] to set up Sunday's Big 12-Big Ten showdown.
Jong and Maxted win will become the first ITA National Fall Champions in school history should they win.
The duo has won nine of their last 10 matches and qualified for consecutive ITA championships with Saturday's result. Jong and Maxted, the preseason ITA No. 3 doubles team, have dropped just two of their 10 sets played in San Diego.
