Match features every National Champion since 2006
FORT WORTH – In a match for the ages, No. 3 TCU heads to West Virginia for a four-team match featuring four of the sport's top teams. No. 1 Kentucky, No. 2 Alaska, No. 3 TCU and No. 6 West Virginia have combined to win every National Championship since 2006 and all but one since 1988. The two-day tournament begins with smallbore on Saturday and concludes Sunday with air rifle.
All four teams rank in the top five nationally in aggregate average. Alaska leads the way with an average of 4,745.0 followed by TCU (4,742.5) and West Virginia (4,716.0). Kentucky sits fifth nationally with an average of 4,713.33.
That trend continues through each discipline. The four schools are tops nationally in air rifle led by TCU's 2,387.0 In smallbore, Alaska leads the pack with an average of 2,366.5. TCU sits second (2,355.5), while West Virginia (2,335.75) and Kentucky (2,335.0) round out the top five.
The Horned Frogs have been a force in air rifle. The squad features four of the top 8 shooters in the country. Kristen Hemphill is one of two shooters who have fired a 600 this season. She ranks third nationally with a season average of 598.5. Julie Johannessen ranks fifth (596.67) followed by Katie Zaun in seventh (596.67) and Stephanie Grundsoee (596.5).
In smallbore, three of the top five shooters reside in Fort Worth. Grundsoee ranks second nationally with an average of 594.0. Johannessen sits third (593.3) and Abigail Gordon rounds out the top five with a season average of 591.0.
Alaska has three shooters that average a 590 or better in smallbore led by Peter Fiori's national-best average of 594.25. The Nanooks also boast the top shooter in air rifle in Ryan Kissell who averages a 598.67. Four other shooters have a 591 or better season average in the discipline.
Kentucky's roster features seven shooters that average a 590 or better in air rifle. Sofia Ceccarello leads the squad with a 598.5. In smallbore, Will Shaner is the top shooter with a 589 average.
All but one Mountaineer averages at least a 592 in air rifle. Transfer Mary Tucker leads West Virginia in both disciplines with a 598 in air rifle and a 590.5 in smallbore.
The match is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. (CT) on both Saturday and Sunday.
