TULSA – TCU posted a 3-0 combined record in the opening rounds of the ITA Men's All-American Singles and Doubles Championships on Wednesday at the Case Tennis Center on the campus of University of Tulsa.
Luc Fomba, the No. 5 ITA singles player, kicked off the afternoon with a 6-3, 7-6 sweep of No. 39 Harris Walker of Harvard in the round of 64.
Fomba earned his first career victory in the ITA All-American Singles Championship with Wednesday's result. He is the No. 4 seed in the bracket. The senior is now 4-1 in singles matches this fall.
He returned to the doubles court alongside Pedro Vives. Playing together for the first time as Horned Frogs, Fomba and Vives staved off a game pairing of No. 33 Filip Planinsek and German Samofalov of Alabama to secure a spot in the round of 16 on Thursday. Fomba and Vives won the first set 6-3 but fell 4-6 in the second frame to force a 10-point match tiebreaker, which they claimed 10-8.
Sander Jong and Lui Maxted then closed the show in style. The duo blew past No. 20 Edoarddo Graziani and Kevin Zhu of Penn in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Jong and Maxted are No. 3 in the ITA doubles rankings and seeded second in the tournament bracket.
Fomba draws the assignment of No. 57 Stefan Hampfe of Tulsa in singles play on Thursday.
Fomba and Vives can cement their spot in the doubles quarterfinals with a victory over Josh Wilson and Christian Worst of Liberty. Jong and Maxted are set to square off with Florida's Tanapatt Nirundorn and Togan Tokac.
