Berzina finishes unbeaten
HOCKLEY, Texas – Eight-seeded TCU defeated third-seeded and No. 17 nationally ranked Oklahoma State, 4.5-1.5, to finish a program-best third at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Wednesday at The Clubs at Houston Oaks.
Prior to Wednesday, the best the Horned Frogs had finished was fifth, most recently last season.
Chris Berzina won six of his first eight holes against Hazen Newman to cruise to a 6&5 win. The senior from Fort Worth went undefeated (3-0-2) throughout the tournament.
Brandon Massey defeated OSU's Bo Jin, 4&3, and Brent Hamm won 3&1 over John Wild. Jacob Olesen won in a close one, 2&1 over Jonas Baumgartner.
TCU (3-1-1) playing for third place was a result of finishing second in Pool A, while OSU finished second in Pool B. No. 1 ranked Texas Tech won the tournament by beating Oklahoma, 3.5-2.5, in the championship match.
The Horned Frogs will return to action in the new year, at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Hawaii, Feb. 8-10.
