Swimming & diving wraps up 2021-22 regular season
FORT WORTH – After strong performances at Iowa State and Texas, the TCU swimming & diving teams look to wrap up the 2021-22 regular season. The women's team will take on UIW and Rice at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 28 and the men's team competes against UIW at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 29 in San Antonio, Texas.
Earlier this season, the Cardinals competed in a dual meet against the Frogs. The women's team won 177-123 and the men's team defeated UIW 165-135.
Several Frogs notched wins for the women's team. Olivia Rhodes picked up two individual wins as she won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle with times of 24.01 and 53.31, respectively. In the 100 breaststroke, Sheridan Schreiber swam her way to a first-place finish with a time of 1:05.12.
On the boards, Connie Deighton won the 1-meter and notched a Zone cut with a score of 277.43.
Geremia Freri picked up three individual wins against the Cardinals as he won the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 400 IM. The Frog relays also shined in the relays as the 400 medley relay team of Stefan Varga, Janis Silins, Piotr Sadlowski and Noah Cumby won with a time of 3:21.68.
David Ekdahl shined in his Horned Frogs debut as he set the school record on 1-meter with a score of 363.97. He also won on 3-meter with a score of 370.72 and earned Zone cuts on both boards.
Throughout history, TCU's women are 7-0 against the Cardinals. The men's team is 4-1, with their only loss to UIW coming in 2019.
Last Time Out
The TCU women's team lost a heartbreaker to Iowa State, falling 173-161. Despite the loss, the Frogs shined and picked up several huge wins.
Serena Gould won the 100 and 200 freestyle with times of 52.45 and 1:52.75, respectively. On the boards, Anna Kwong earned Big 12 Diver of the Week honors after winning and getting Zone cuts on both 1-meter and 3-meter.
On the men's side, TCU fell to No. 1 Texas 189-100. Freri clocked a huge win in the 500 freestyle with a B-cut time of 4:21.69 and Alec Hubbard broke the school record on platform with a score of 377.03. In the long course time trials, Freri broke the school record in the 400 LCM freestyle with a time of 3:56.01.
The Frogs also broke two LCM records in the 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays. The team of Joao Andrade, Jadon Wuilliez, Jake Litchfield and Sadlowski swam a time of 3:53.53 for the new school record. In the 800 freestyle relay, Freri, Luke DiMiceli, Bennett Maczka and Dusan Babic broke the record with a time of 7:40.57.
NCAA Cuts
So far this season, eight Frogs have earned 24 B cuts. Freri and Silins both have six B cuts on the season, with Freri's coming in the 500 freestyle, 1650 freestyle and 400 IM and Silins' in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Milan Fabian and Sadlowski each have three B cuts this season, with Fabian's coming in the 500 and 1650 freestyles and Sadlowski's in the 100 fly. Raphael Paiva Da Lima picked up a B cut in the 50 freestyle and Noah Cumby has one as well in the 100 freestyle.
So far this season, Rylee Moore, Claire Chahbandour and Sheridan Schreiber have all recorded NCAA B cuts. At the Art Adamson Invitational, Moore's record-breaking time of 53.71 in the 100 backstroke earned herself her fourth B cut of the season in the event. Chahbandour's school record time of 1:01.47 gave her the first B cut of the season in the event for her and Schreiber also got a B cut in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.59.
Big 12 Awards
Freri has racked up Big 12 awards this season as he won Newcomer of the Week four times (Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Jan. 26) and Swimmer of the Week twice (Oct. 6, Oct. 20). Adding to the Swimmer of the Week honors was Sadlowski on Nov. 3 and Wuilliez earned Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 24.
On the women's side, Kwong was the most recent award winner as she has won Diver of the Week twice (Dec. 8, Jan. 19). Rhodes and Moore have also picked up Big 12 weekly awards. Moore earned Newcomer of the Week (Nov. 3, Nov. 24) and Rhodes garnered Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 6.
Success on the Global Stage
David Ekdahl competed at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships and Wuilliez swam at the FINA World Swimming Championships.
Ekdahl, who dove for Team Sweden, placed third in the Mixed Team event, finishing only behind Russia and Italy. He also qualified and placed ninth in the Group A Boys 1-meter final with a score of 413.35.
At the FINA World Swimming Championships, Wuilliez broke four Antigua and Barbuda national records on two relays and two individual records. Individually, he broke national records in the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke. In the 50m breaststroke, he swam a 26.98 to finish 21st overall. He also swam a stellar time of 58.73 to break the national record in the 100m breaststroke, placing 24th overall.
He was also part of the national-record holding mixed 4x50 freestyle relay team and mixed 4x50 medley relay team.
