Mercedes Aristegui claims her first national weekly honor
FORT WORTH – Mercedes Aristegui has been named ITA/UTR National Player of the Week; the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today. Aristegui recorded the best doubles win of her career this past week, defeating the No. 14 pairing from LSU (Richardson/Geissler). She leads the Horned Frogs with a perfect 5-0 singles record this dual season, including wins over LSU and Texas A&M last week.
As the games have passed, I have felt more comfortable and confident playing," Aristegui said. "The coaches haven been helping me in many different things and I'm looking forward to what's coming. I think we have a very special team. The whole team has a great chemistry and works very hard, so I'm sure good things are coming. It is very unique to have a team where players and coaches are on the same page and we have that here at TCU."
Aristegui has been dominant this season, posting a 5-0 singles record, without losing a single set (11-0). She has contributed singles points in all but one match this season, playing at No. 3 singles.
As a result of her successes, Aristegui's universal tennis ranking (UTR) rose by .16 points over the past week. The ITA UTR Player of the Week honors a collegiate tennis player whose increase in UTR rating throughout the previous week was indicative of his/her high level of performance, including notable wins such as clinching matches and upsets.
Aristegui and the TCU Women's Tennis team will build on this momentum as they embark on the first road trip of the season this weekend. The Horned Frogs will travel through Alabama for a set of matches against Samford (Feb. 12 – 2 p.m.) and Alabama (Feb. 14 – 2 p.m.).
