TCU – TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 27, Texas 32
Oct. 2, 2021
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the game:
Bottom line is, you can't turn the ball over and you have to tackle. I was really proud of the guys for stopping them on 4th-and-1. If you want to know when kids have heart, there you go. Outside of that, we have to tackle and we can't hurt ourselves with turnovers.
On Da'Veawn Armstead's first game:
[After TJ went out], Armstead had never played, so then we moved Tomlinson to free safety, which he had never practiced, so we could get a little bit more leadership. Armstead is going to be a really good player. He made some plays and some tackles.
On TCU's tackling
We had an opportunity and we have to take care of that opportunity when we can. Like I told them downstairs, I was proud of them, but you can't turn the ball over, punt, give up sacks and fumble the ball, and we can't tackle. I thought we tackled better today, but we still didn't tackle well enough, not like a TCU defense. But I thought we played with more energy today, and that's going to give you more opportunity to win ball games. Win, lose or draw, you want to have to learn how to play great.
TCU Quarterback Max Duggan
On something missing from the team
"Our defense was playing their tails off and we were not able to give them good field position and easy scores. When we needed to score, we were moving the ball but then we would turn it over and give it right back to them. It really puts our defense in a tough spot and really takes their momentum away."
On the teams passing game today
"It was alright. With how deep their safeties play, you don't really get a lot of shots with them. We had to get it to our guys underneath them to make plays. I missed, and I could have done better with converting third downs. There are still a lot of things we need to hound in on, especially within the RedZone."
On where the team goes from here
"We can't feel sorry for ourselves. Going in two weeks straight with a loss is going to suck, but nobody is going to feel bad for us and Texas Tech isn't going to feel sorry for us. We can't listen to the outside noise; we just need to focus on ourselves and get a win down in Lubbock."
TCU Defensive End Dylan Horton
On BiJan Robinson being difficult to stop:
"I feel like as a team, collectively, we weren't tackling. That's something we need to emphasize in the games."
On changes made on the defensive line:
"As a defensive line, we were pass rushing with as much effort as we could. We game planned this week, as we do for all our opponents. Overall, we tried as hard as we could to get to the quarterback."
On keeping everyone in the locker room positive with two straight losses:
"I feel like we did a lot of good things, despite the loss. I feel like we need to emphasize on those and correct the mistakes and keep pushing forward because it's a long season. There's a lot of time to get better."

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian
On the game:
"I've been talking a lot here in the last three or four months about the resolve of our football team. These guys have been through a lot and they continue to bounce back. I thought today was a great example of that on a few occasions. The opening kickoff for them to take it down and take the lead, I don't think our team really blinked. It didn't send us into a tailspin. We missed a few opportunities in the pass game down the field. We didn't panic. We kept grinding away. We get stopped on 4th and 1 down there in the fourth quarter. They go 99 yards for a touchdown. We get the ball back. They know we're going to run it. We know we're going to run it and to run the clock out, I think it speaks to our team didn't panic. Our team continued to respond. This wasn't a pretty game by any means. There's a bunch to work on and to get better at for individuals, for collectively as a team and for us as coaches. In the end, we fought, we battled, we competed. I think No. 5 (Robinson) kind of epitomizes our football team. The grit. He was exhausted. Thirty-five carries later, the last one was the most important one. To get the first down and seal the win. Overall, I'm proud of our team and it was a good win on the road against a really good football team."
On trusting Bijan Robinson:
"I think you earn that trust. He's a guy, whether it's on the field or off the field, just who he is as a person, who he is from a preparation standpoint, what we're trying to do, he's earned our trust. Quite frankly, that was why I went for it on the goal line too. Part of it was I believed in him and I believed in our guys up front. Part of it was I was sending a message to our team "I believe in them.""
On learning how to win:
"I'd much rather win ugly than lose pretty. This was an ugly one. We created three turnovers and got three field goals out of it. That's not what we're looking for. We were spotty, at best in the red area. I think we had opportunities to capitalize and extend the lead in the game and we didn't do that. We missed on a couple opportunities in the passing game that could have had an impact on the game. But you have to find a way to find a way. Different aspects of the team need to pick each other up and you need to play complimentary football. The turnovers were big. The run game had to step up. We leaned on No. 5 and kind of found a way to get a win on the road, which is tough to do against good teams."
On running down to the endzone and posing:
"We'll fix that. That one is fixable. We'll get that one fixed before I get on the bus. We'll get that taken care of. We're not in the National Football League. I know we all want to be, but we're not, so we'll take care of that one."
Texas Running Back Bijan Robinson
Final Play of the Game
"I just knew I had to go get that first down so the team could keep moving forward and end the game. I just realized that the grit we have as a team is just a huge thing for not only our offense but the whole team."
Trust in the Coaches
"Trust is huge, especially in Coach Sark and how he calls my number. I just know that I have to put my head down and do the best I can for the offense and team. It was awesome to see Coach Sark trust me in getting that first down and get that big run so we could end the game."
Offensive line adjusting
"It just shows the versatility that our offensive line has and the way they can adjust to different situations just puts a smile on my face because you can see what they can do moving forward."
Texas Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown
Overcoming Mistakes
"There are three phases of the game that you have to overcome in order to win at this level of football. Being able to be make a play on special teams changes the momentum and gives the offense the ball back is just one of those big plays that you make with effort."
Locker Room Conversation Coming into Game
"Don't buy the lie. TCU is a great team, and they recruit high players as we do. We knew we weren't going to get the team that we've seen on film the past couple of weeks and that wouldn't be the team we would be playing; we get TCUs best shot every time we play them. TCU is going to give us everything they've got, and they did we just came out on top."
