LUBBOCK, Texas — TCU's men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up its first two-day meet of the season at the Texas Tech Invitational.
Too Much Power
Tinotenda Matiyenga won the men's 200m (20.75) and broke the Zimbabwe national indoor record for the event in the process. The senior's time checks in at No. 6 in the nation entering the weekend.
Not One, Not Two, Not Three,
Not four... but five Frogs placed in the top-10 of the men's 200m. Matiyenga's record-breaking time lead the way with highly touted freshman Robert Gregory Jr. (20.78) closely behind in second place. Kundai Maguranyanga ran a 20.95 for fourth place to complete TCU's trio in the top five, all of which ran sub-21.
Freshman Dennis Phillips (21.43) and sophomore Simba Maketa (21.46) finished in eighth and ninth, respectively. Maketa was the only one who showed up for heat No. 3 and was moved to the next heat and forced to run in lane two. He was originally slotted to run in lane four.
Women's 3000m
Freshman Mariana Martinez won the women's 3000m with a time of 10:13.65.
Director of Track and Field Darryl Anderson's Thoughts
"I thought we had a good meet," Director of Track and Field Darryl Anderson said. "We're starting to do what we're capable of doing. Du came in yesterday and jumped really far and has the farthest jump in the country right now. Today, the 200 meter guys really ran well with three guys running under 21 seconds and putting us at three guys in a position to get to the national meet. The mile relay won in a Big 12 Conference level meet competing against Texas Tech and Baylor. I think all-in-all we're really starting to figure things out."
