Award honors the top community servant in college football
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- TCU offensive guard Kellton Hollins and linebacker Garret Wallow have been named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, honoring college football's top community servant.
The Wuerffel Trophy, named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, is presented to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the premier major college football award that places the majority of its voting emphasis on community service.
Hollins was a 2019 semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award and was TCU's 2019 Big 12 Champions for Life representative.
A senior form Zachary, La., Hollins has served as president of S.P.A.R.K., an organization started by TCU football student-athletes to provide motivation to local youth about the importance of education and serving the community. He has also worked with Fort Worth youth through H.O.P.E. Farm, Inc., University Christian Church and TCU's Starpoint School. Additionally, he's been a regular motivational speaker at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, little league football teams and local schools on the college experience, leadership, being a role model, FCA, his faith and preparing for the future. He also completed an internship at Fort Worth ISD's My Brother's Keeper of Fort Worth, dedicated to improve the academic and social outcomes of boys and young men of color.
While back home, Hollins donated 80 Bibles to a Louisiana youth football all-star team. When visiting South Africa, he went to an elementary school to help teach physical education classes and was part of a women's empowerment program.
Additionally, Hollins participated with the NFL Huddle 100 initiative with the Dallas Cowboys at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club. He has assisted at TCU's Frog Camp and is working on creating a foundation to assist student-athletes from his community preparing to play on the collegiate level.
Hollins started all 11 games he played in 2018 and was a team captain in each contest.
Wallow is a preseason All-American and also named to watch lists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bednarik Award, Butkus Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He was first-team All-Big 12 and honorable-mention Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year last season. He was also an honorable-mention All-American by Phil Steele.
A senior from New Orleans, Wallow led TCU and the Big 12 with 125 tackles, including 18 for loss with 3.5 sacks. The 125 stops, more than double the next-closest Horned Frog (Trevon Moehrig, 62), ranked fourth in a season under Head Coach Gary Patterson. Wallow tied for ninth nationally in both tackles (10.4) and TFLs (1.5) per game.
Wallow has played an active part with volunteerism in the Fort Worth community and in his hometown of New Orleans. He has fed the homeless in both cities while hosting programs for area youth, serving as a role model to them and supporting their academic and athletic endeavors. Additionally, he has helped coordinate blood drives and routinely speaks at local schools in Fort Worth about the value of education. He is very active in service projects with his Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at TCU and participated in a food and Christmas drive in New Orleans, where he fed homeless people under a bridge and helped secure donations of toys for families who were not able to afford them.
