Frogs score all three runs with two outs
FORT WORTH – Behind seven shutout innings from Charles King, TCU locked up the series victory over Cal with a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. Tommy Sacco went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in the win.
The Rundown
Charles King (1-1) was outstanding in his third start of the season. He surrendered just five hits in the game, walked one and struck out three over seven innings of work. After a pair of two-out base runners in the third, the right-hander retired 10 straight.
Gene Wood drew a lead-off walk in the second and Hunter Wolfe reached on an infield single to put two on with nobody out. With two outs, Tommy Sacco lined a single up the middle to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
TCU picked up a big insurance run in the fifth. Sacco singled with one out and scored on a two-out triple off the bat of Sam Thompson for a 3-0 lead.
In the later innings as Cal tried to mount a comeback, the Horned Frogs' defense showed up. With runners on the corners and one out in the seventh, Sacco snared a sinking line drive and doubled off the runner at first. Austin Krob surrendered an infield single to lead-off the eighth, but Gray Rodgers started a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
The duo of Drew Hill and Haylen Green slammed the door in the ninth. With a runner on second and nobody out, Hill got a strikeout. With two on, Green came in and retired the final two batters of the game to secure the save.
