Horned Frogs seek fourth conference championship
FORT WORTH – The second-ranked TCU women's rifle team will welcome four other members of the Patriot Rifle Conference to town as it hosts the Championship match Feb. 15-16.
The Horned Frogs are looking to win their fourth Patriot Rifle Conference Championships and first since 2018. Last year, the Frogs placed second overall at the PRC Championships, falling to Air Force by a score of 4,708-4,695. This season, four of the five teams in the PRC rank in the top 15 in the NCAA.
TCU finished the regular season with a record of 10-1, its only loss coming off a tiebreaker early in the season at No. 3 West Virginia. Additionally, it was 5-0 in PRC matches. The team boasts the top aggregate average in the nation, a 4,710.8, and second in smallbore and air rifle with marks of 2,335.8 and 2,375.0, respectively.
Heading into the PRC Championships, the Frogs will be represented by three of the top 10 athletes in the country. Freshman Stephanie Grundsoee leads the team and ranks third in the nation. She is averaging a mark of 1,180.3. Teammate Kristen Hemphill ranks fourth, just a few tenths behind her, with an aggregate average of 1,180.1 and has posted a mark of 1,180 or better in six of her last seven matches.
On Saturday, the teams will compete in smallbore. TCU will be represented by three of the top eight shooters in the discipline. Grundsoee owns an average mark of 585.8 to lead the team. Junior Elizabeth Marsh sits in seventh overall with a 585, while Hemphill rounds outs the top eight with an average score of 584.9. As a team, the Frogs are averaging a strong score of 2,342.5 at home in smallbore.
The air rifle portion of the championship match will take place on Sunday. Additionally, the Frogs are the only team in the nation with three individual performers in the top six in air rifle. Hemphill paces the team with a 595.2, the fourth-best mark in the NCAA. Grundsoee is coming off a career-high performance last week in which she posted a 598. She is averaging a 594.5 this season. Senior Casey Lutz is tied for sixth nationally, with an average score of 593.5. Counter Grace Taschuk sits just outside the top 10 with a 592.5.
Scouting the Competition
Air Force ranks sixth in the country this season with an aggregate average of 4,673.5. The Falcons are paced by Peter Flori, who has the sixth-best aggregate average in the NCAA with a mark of 1,178.8.
Ohio State sits 13th in the national rankings with a season average of 4,649.3. TCU defeated the Buckeyes twice this season, most recently in a dominant 4,724-4,644 fashion. This year, OSU has been led by Ariel Hall in smallbore (578.2) and Rhiann Travis air rifle (590.4).
The Nanooks of Alaska Fairbanks come into the match with the No. 14 ranking. Kellen McAferty leads the team with the No. 6 smallbore average in the nation (585.1).
The UTEP Miners round out the Patriot Rifle Conference opponents. They competed against the Frogs in two matches this season, including last weekend in El Paso. UTEP averages a 4,586.4 aggregate score.
