TCU – TEXAS TECH POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 34, Texas Tech 18
November 7, 2020
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
Opening Statement:
"I will tell you this, passing wise, we took what they gave us. With that defense, they were not going to let us throw the ball. On defense, we have to eliminate the mistakes and the big plays, but overall, I thought we played great. In special teams, we punted well. We had some big returns that flipped the field. Derius Davis and the guys blocking for him did a great job. It was one of those wins, where you hate winning against a friend. I have known Coach Wells for a while and that was a tough ballgame."
On defensive line success:
"We got pressure against them last year. We did a good job bringing pressure early but not so good late. I was proud of them. The last two games we really decided to start rushing and I'm proud of the way we have done that."
On Max Duggan rushing:
"Rushing, you know, that is one of his strengths. When you have a guy who outruns the secondary, you know he is pretty athletic. We are pretty excited to get back to 3-3. This team is does not want to lose. We've got to go play a good West Virginia team next week so we got to get ready to go for that."
On his 200th win with TCU:
"That is a result of a lot of good players over 23 years, to be honest with you. That's also a result of a lot of good coaches. Anyone can decide to find something negative in there, but the bottom line is that is successful and we have got to keep doing that."
On the O-Line and the running game:
"When they got down in the first half, I told them 'hey, it's a four-quarter ballgame, find ways to win. It's not going the way you want it to.' We've been in this situation and overcome it for years. We keep getting better. We are better in protection; we held the ball probably a little too long on a couple occasions. We've got to get open and we can't drop passes when we do get a chance to throw it."
On the energy for the team:
"Today was close to our most complete game of the season. We played hard and I think they gained confidence."
On Davis' growth in the return game:
"Those guys did a great job. He had some great runs and the punt return team had some great blocks. We were very successful in flipping the field. Those are big deals, he has come a long way. We were to put him back there his first couple of years because he would drop them in practice, but he doesn't drop them anymore. Now he is a weapon because of his speed. We are very excited about that."
TCU Quarterback Max Duggan
On run game and run in TDs:
"Tonight, I wasn't throwing the ball great and I need to do better on that. O-line and the receivers really stepped up. We were able to run the ball and able to attack them that way. We just weren't able to throw the ball the way we wanted to tonight."
On what it means being 3-3:
"It helps our morale. It gives us the energy to go into next week's game."
On Coach P and what he means to the program:
"He has done a lot for us, for the program, and for this city. It just means a lot for us to be able to help him get that win."
On defense being someone, you can rely on to take off pressure:
"It helps a lot. Our offense was struggling in the first half. It is nice to be able to go off of the defense. When they made a play and got momentum, it helped us. They were doing a phenomenal job at putting us in good field position, we just need to do a better job at capitalizing that."
On adjustments made during halftime
"We just said that we needed to focus on us. We are making mistakes that we shouldn't be. We are shooting ourselves in the foot. We just have to do what we planned on this week, what we practiced. We just wanted to focus on ourselves and do what we were taught to do."
TCU Wide Receiver Derius Davis
On Max Duggan's Performance and Efforts
"It was phenomenal, when one things not going your way you have to find another way to win. That just shows you how Max is, he's a warrior."
On a match race against Max Duggan who would win
"Max, he is way faster than me."
On getting his hands on the trophy
"I actually did get to touch it and also did the giddy-up dance with it."
On players going out and getting injured
"It's always the next man up, those guys who stepped in on those positions really stepped up and got us our first win in the Carter. Now we just have to carry this momentum with us the rest of the season."
TCU Free Safety Trevon Moehrig
On defense coming out with energy
"The energy helped us a lot getting our momentum started early in the first half and getting a couple of in-and-outs. It carried over into the second half and we kept the energy alive."
On his pick at the end of the game
"It felt great to finally get a pick. More than that I was happy with the team win and the way both the offense and defense performed today. I'll take a pick any day but a team win is more important."
On the defensive line
"It really takes some pressure off the DBs shoulders having a line up there that can disrupt the quarterback and stop the run. It definitely gives us a lot of motivation to see them eating up front."
On Coach P
"He's a great mentor and an amazing leader, somebody who is always going to have your back. On the flip side of that he's always going to tell you the truth, to sum it up he's somebody I can talk to about anything and he has helped my game tremendously."

Texas Tech Head Coach Matt Wells
On the game:
"This is a tale of two games. The first part of the game, I thought our defense played outstanding. We really struggled on offense we struggled protecting the quarterback. On third down, we struggled to keep drives sustained but our defense played very well. We were down several guys. I thought their effort and production early in the game was really good to be down 10-0 with where the field position started in those early drives. We got a little momentum there before halftime with the offense and then the field goals. It was great execution with the field goal team to go in and out with three seconds to go and getting set and getting it off. I was really proud of that. It was a little bit of a blow in the first series of the third quarter, they (TCU) take it all the way down and score, but we battled. Then we started hitting some plays on offense, some deep balls. It's just not enough. Then at the end, it was always battling trying to get back into the two-score range. We scored to get within 11, went for two to get down nine. Now we know a field goal and a touchdown can win the game. Then unfortunately, we just missed a field goal at the end and got it into a good range. Unfortunately, we missed it and that's that. These guys continue to fight. They continue to really spill their guts. We've got to go back. We've got to continue the faith in our players and our staff. We've got to continue to fight every week and that's all we can ask of our staff and our players right now. Keep fighting and trying to find a win."
On attempting the field goal on 2nd down, trailing by 9 points with 2:44 remaining:
"It may have been a down early. But we said we wanted to go down and try to kick a field goal and we needed to score a touchdown. We know we needed to have time left. We had to stop them on the back end. We got Trey (Wolff) down into range where we wanted it. We got inside the 25, so a 39-yard field goal, which is in the range where he's at right now as a kicker. We understand he hadn't made one all year and we really haven't attempted one in about three weeks. It may have been a down early, but it what we wanted to do. We wanted to kick a field goal on the first or second possession. We had to have time to get it back, kick it deep, stop them on defense, use your timeout, then have another chance on offense to go down and throw it in the endzone."
On TCU quarterback Max Duggan:
"Those two long runs were back breakers. We had done a good job of actually containing Max. Max is probably the fastest quarterback in the league. He's extremely fast, we knew that. They like to run power read with him downhill. I don't know how long the two runs were, but I see he rushed for 154. I really thought we did a good job of containing him. I just know, obviously, we didn't fit that run fit right at the end.
Henry Colombi, Texas Tech Quarterback
On the cause of lack of success in the first half:
"We weren't executing. The defense got us the ball back a ton of times and gave us a number of opportunities and we just weren't executing in all areas and it starts with me. I have to be better in those situations and not wait until the second half to get things going."
On the play near the end of the game where TTU went for a field goal:
"That's not my decision, it's Coach Wells' decision and us, as players, support Coach Wells 100 precent. It's his call and we're rolling with it. The [coaches] said we're down by 9 points and we're going to make it a one possession game, cut it to 6, and either play defense or onside kick it and I completely agreed."
On the offense line's inability to block for him:
"I can't say I was thinking about it the entire game. It's a unit that I trust. I have their back and they have mine. You can't play scared to get hit or sacked. I don't think that was phasing me moving forward and it won't phase me moving forward into next week."
Colin Schooler, Texas Tech Linebacker
On Max Duggan's success in the second half:
"Coming into the game we knew he was their second leading rusher, so we knew he could run the ball and first half we did a pretty good job of containing him, but then in the second half they did a good job adjusting and kudos to them for exploiting and getting positive yards off of that. Having eleven threats with a dual quarterback running the ball is hard to guard."
On his impactful fourth down play:
"Second half they started running the ball more and it was a design running back lead with the quarterback leading, so it wasn't too hard to decipher and I had to make a play. It was fourth down and the team needed it."
On preparing for the game with so many defensive linemen out:
"It was tough adjusting this week, but the next man's up and when their number is called I feel like our guys did a really good job of adjusting to it and Tuesday was an off day because of the election, so that's one practice that we didn't have to work on that, but I thought we did a really good job of adjusting to it and having guys play out of position and get their feet wet in a game and step up. I'm really proud of them."
