TCU forced a fifth set but ultimately fell to Florida Atlantic
FORT WORTH -- TCU Volleyball (3-2) couldn't pull off the comeback as Florida Atlantic managed a 3-2 win over the Horned Frogs Saturday afternoon at The Rickel inside the University Rec Center. The Frogs took the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth but FAU was the first to 15 points, handing TCU its second loss of the season: 23-25, 29-31, 25-18, 25-22, 10-15.
"Our team bounced back in some areas of play," head coach Jill Kramer said. "There was a lot more fight in us. We didn't come out in the first couple of sets the way we should have but we got it going in the end of the second set and came up just a little short. FAU is an experienced team that didn't make as many errors as we did down the stretch and that's where we need to get better."
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (FAU, 25-23): The Owls jumped out to a quick start offensively, converting six early kills into an 8-3 advantage. The Frogs worked themselves back into things, tying the match at 18-18. TCU even took a lead late off of back-to-back aces from Manyang but FAU rattled off a 3-0 run to close out the set. Adams led the team with three kills, two of which came in the first five points. Manyang finished with two kills, two aces, two blocks and a dig.
Set 2 (FAU, 31-29): This time it was the Frogs who got out to a strong start, taking advantage of some FAU errors to lead, 9-5. The Owls fought back with a run to tie the score, 10-10, starting a trend of tie scores that would last through the remainder of the set. Neither team managed a lead of more than three points from that moment on as the set extended past the 25-point marker. TCU couldn't capitalize on two set-points and dropped the set, 29-31. Adams led the Frogs with five kills.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-18): Three kills from Nalls gave TCU an early 9-4 lead. That momentum carried on as TCU never allowed the lead to change hands. FAU made it tight, drawing within one, 13-12. But aggressive play at the net from Manyang helped the Frogs on a 7-2 run, giving TCU a 20-14 advantage. The Frogs kept the momentum in their favor to claim a seven-point set win. Defense fueled the Horned Frog resurgence as TCU held the Owls to just .038 hitting on 22 attacks.
Set 4 (TCU, 25-22): The Horned Frog defense dug in the start the fourth, forcing the Owls into six early attack errors to claim a 10-4 lead. For the second straight set, the Frogs would never allow FAU to claim a lead and finished off with a critical set win, forcing the first fifth set of the 2019 season. Nalls delivered five kills for the second consecutive set to lead the team. TCU controlled the pace throughout the set, finishing with a match-best .318 hitting percentage while holding FAU to -.069 hitting.
Set 5 (FAU, 15-10): Florida Atlantic's upperclassmen leaders took over the fifth set as Matos and Nemtuda combined for all 10 Owl kills. FAU jumped out to a 5-1 lead and wouldn't allow the Frogs back in, winning the final set by a five-point margin.
