
Mapaya, Mokaleng to Compete at IAAF World Championships

Two Frogs will represent their home countries
DOHA, Qatar — Chengetayi Mapaya and Derrick Mokaleng will compete in Doha, Qatar, at the 2019 IAAF World Championships taking place between Sept. 27 – Oct. 6.
Mapaya, a junior, will represent Zimbabwe in the triple jump. The qualifying round begins on Friday, Sept. 27, at 11:25 a.m. Central Time, with finals taking place on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1:45 p.m. CT.
The Harare, Zimbabwe, native is a four-time All-American and won the national championship in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past summer.
Mokaleng will run for South Africa in the 400m and the 4x400 relay. Qualifying heats for the 400m occur on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 8:35 a.m. CT. Semifinals will be at 12:35 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and finalists compete on Friday, Oct. 4, at 2:20 p.m. CT.
4x400 relay qualifying heats happen at noon on Sept. 28. Finals are set for 2:35 on Sept. 29.
A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Mokaleng holds TCU's outdoor 400m record (45.02) and is No. 2 in school history for the indoor 400m (45.68). He also owns the No. 2 mark in the 600y (1:08.18). The senior also ran at the 2019 African Games in August where he and the South African 4x400 team garnered a silver medal.
"We're very proud of Du and Derrick representing their home countries at the IAAF World Championships," head coach Darryl Anderson said. "This will be a great experience for both of them."
Over 1,900 athletes from 210 countries will gather in the Qatari capital to compete at the IAAF World Championships. Athletes will compete for medals across 24 events.
