King throws second complete game of the season
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Charles King was brilliant in throwing his second complete game of the season as TCU guaranteed the series victory over No. 17 West Virginia with a 6-1 win. Josh Watson hit a lead-off homer as part of a three hit game.
The Rundown
Josh Watson led off the game with his seventh home run of the season.
West Virginia looked poised to tie the game in the bottom of the first after a two-out double with a runner on first. Unlucky for the Mountaineers, the ball bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double, forcing the runner back to third. King got a ground out to end the frame, preserving TCU's 1-0 lead.
TCU put up two runs in the third to increase its lead to 3-0. Watson opened the inning with a base hit and moved to second on an Austin Henry single. Alex Isola came through with a two-out double to drive in both runners.
Another two runs crossed the plate in the fourth. After drawing a walk, Adam Oviedo raced home on a double down the line off the bat of Zach Humphreys. Two batters later, Humphreys scored on a Jake Guenther groundout for a 5-0 lead.
Johnny Rizer and Isola traded doubles in the fifth to extend the Frogs' advantage to 6-0.
The Mountaineers took advantage of a lead-off error in the seventh to plate their only run of the game. It could have been more as they had runners on the corners with nobody out, but King retired three straight with a pair of strikeouts around a ground out to hold West Virginia to the one run.
King ultimately retired the final nine batters he faced in the game to secure the victory.
