WACO, Texas – In a tightly-contested matchup, the TCU equestrian team came up just short as Georgia edged the Horned Frogs, 887.5-881, in the raw-score tiebreaker after the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the Horsemanship final at the NCEA Championships at the Extraco Events Center on Saturday.
The national runner-up finish in Horsemanship marks the conclusion of the 2018-19 season for the TCU equestrian squad which saw the Frogs earn five All-America and six Rider of the Month selections.
Director of Equestrian Haley Schoolfield
"I thought Horsemanship rode incredibly. They were brave and confident out there, it was just a very competitive round. We came up just short, of course, that is not what we aspired to, but I am so proud of our effort. Reflecting on the year, we had some high highs, and some low lows, we really learned a lot. We traveled to a lot of away meets and in the end we showed ourselves how competitive we could be and we are absolutely as able as anyone else here. We are a very young and developing team. I believe that this is a team that we could see in the winner's circle in the near future."
The Rundown
Freshman Natalia DeVencenty was the first rider in Saturday's event final and set the tone with what would be the highest score by either team, posting a 226.5 on Chili. She would go on to earn that point for the Horned Frogs as her Georgia counterpart, Maddie Anger, scored a 224.5.
Junior Jamie Cook rode second for TCU, putting up score of 215.5 on Allie, but the Bulldogs would take the point thanks to a score of 223.5 by Sara Lewis. Fellow classmate Cydney Benes followed Cook but her score would be held for review following the final ride, in which junior Josie Mootz dropped a 222.5-219.5 decision to UGA's Graysen Stroud on DeDe.
Upon the conclusion of action, TCU eagerly awaited the results of the video review of Benes' score which came back as a 219.5. That was enough to give Benes the point over Georgia's Lexi Lane, who tallied a 217.5, and tie the overall score but not enough to push the Frogs ahead in the raw-score tiebreaker, which the Bulldogs claimed 887.5-881.0.
It was TCU's third tiebreaker in Horsemanship this weekend after it previously defeated both Texas A&M (864.5-860.5) and Baylor (879.5-851.0) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, on Friday. The Frogs also bested Delaware State, 3-1, in the first round of the NCEA Championships on Thursday.
Notes
- Runner-up is the best finish for the Frogs since 2016 where they lost to Auburn by a point.
- TCU was in the finals in Western for the second time in program history, the last time being when it won Western in 2008.
- TCU's raw score of 881 was its best all week in Horsemanship.
