Frogs score three in the ninth to win
FORT WORTH – Adam Oviedo's base hit completed the comeback for No. 20 TCU as the Horned Frogs scored three times in the ninth to steal a 3-2 victory over No. 9 Texas Friday night at Lupton Stadium.
The Rundown
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, TCU staged a furious comeback, scoring three times to rally for the win. Alex Isola was hit by the pitch and Jake Guenther walked to put the tying runs on base. Two wild pitches later and Isola had scored and pinch runner Brad Czerniejewski was standing on third as the tying run with nobody out.
Austin Henry worked a walk to put the go-ahead run on base. Johnny Rizer tied the game with a base hit through a drawn-in infield. On the play, Henry raced to third to put the winning run on third. Adam Oviedo blooped a single into left field to cap the comeback.
The game was a classic pitcher's duel between TCU's Nick Lodolo and Texas' Bryce Elder. Both went toe-to-toe through seven scoreless innings. Each induced a pair of double play balls and kept runners to a minimum.
Rizer made the play of the game in the fourth inning, robbing Zach Zubia of a two-run home run.
Neither team had a runner reach third base until the eighth inning. The Longhorns were the first to touch third and they capitalized, picking up the game's first run on a double steal with two outs. Duke Ellis was initially called out, but upon review, he was called safe to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns added a run in the top of the ninth without the benefit of a hit. A lead-off walk to Ryan Reynolds opened the inning. He was standing on third with one out and scored on a Michael McCann sacrifice fly.
Lodolo pitched eight innings in the no-decision. He allowed a run on nine hits, walked two and struck out nine. Marcelo Perez (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
