Frogs finish California trip with 2-2 record
SAN DIEGO – No. 21 San Diego rallied with eight unanswered runs to steal a 9-6 victory over No. 20 TCU on Tuesday night at Fowler Park. Josh Watson went 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs to lead the Horned Frogs' offense.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs built an early 5-0 lead in the game, scoring in each of the first three innings. Back-to-back two-out singles from Austin Henry and Johnny Rizer in the first gave the Frogs a 2-0 advantage.
Two more runs followed in the second as the lead grew to 4-0. Adam Oviedo's double kick-started the inning. He scored on a Josh Watson base knock. An Alex Isola hit drove in Porter Brown with the final run of the frame.
Conner Shepherd's one-out triple led to the fifth run of the game as he scored on an Oviedo sacrifice fly.
San Diego started the comeback with a two-out run in the fourth. But that tally was answered by the Frogs in the sixth. Brown walked to open the inning and scored on a Watson double to restore the five-run lead, 6-1.
The Torero bats came to life in the sixth as they sent 11 men to the plate and scored six times to take a 7-6 lead. The first six batters reached base and all six scored. An error with two on allowed the tying runs to score. Shane McGuire's one-out single drove in the go-ahead run. San Diego took advantage of a walk and two errors in the seventh to score an insurance run. Three walks and a hit batter in the eighth turned into the final run of the contest.
Jared Janczak started for the Frogs and allowed just a run on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Augie Mihlbauer (1-1) took the loss after being touched for a pair of unearned runs in his 1 2/3 innings on the mound.
