Brown and Watson tally four hits each

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – No. 16 TCU rode an offensive explosion in the middle innings to a 9-4 victory over Virginia Saturday night at Salt River Fields. Porter Brown and Josh Watson combined to go for 8-for-10 at the top of the order and drove in a combined five runs.

The Rundown
TCU opened the scoring with a three-run third. Hunter Wolfe drew a lead-off walk and scored on a Brown double down the left-field line. Watson followed with a run-scoring double and eventually scored on a Jake Guenther groundout for a 3-0 lead.

Four more runs, all coming with two outs, crossed the plate in the fourth as TCU opened up a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back walks to Bobby Goodloe and Wolfe with two out kept the inning alive. Brown's third hit of the game drove in Goodloe. Watson added a two-run single before scoring on a Henry base knock.

Virginia took advantage of a quartet of walks in the fifth inning to claw back into the game. A wild pitch brought home the first run of the game and a two-run single from Brendan Rivoli made it a 7-3 contest.

TCU answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Humphreys reached on a lead-off error and scored on a one-out single from Andrew Keefer. The Frogs added another run in the eighth as Brown scored on a Guenther groundout to make it 9-3.

An unearned run in the ninth for Virginia accounted for the final score.

Jared Janczak made his first start of the season. He allowed two runs on two hits, walked three and struck out three in four innings of work. Augie Mihlbauer (1-0) earned the win in relief. He tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing a hit, two walks and striking out two. Dalton Brown tossed two scoreless frames and fanned two.

Stat of the Game
8 – Josh Watson and Porter Brown combined to record eight hits at the top of the order. They each tallied a four-hit game and combined to drive in five runs.

With the win, TCU is now 1-1 on the season. The Horned Frogs will wrap up play in the MLB4 Tournament Sunday against No. 1 Vanderbilt. Game time is set for Noon.
