Katie Clark named All-Big 12 2nd Team, Julia Adams All-Big 12 Rookie Team
FORT WORTH -- The Big 12 conference office has awarded two postseason all-conference awards to TCU volleyball upon conclusion of the 2019 regular season. Sophomore Katie Clark was named All-Big 12 Second Team and Freshman Julia Adams was awarded All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors.
"We love seeing our student-athletes get rewarded by other coaches in the league for their body of work throughout the season," head coach Jill Kramer said. "Every member of our team understands they are competing for and with each other and are all a part of the daily efforts it takes to be recognized."
Clark, an Arlington native, emerged as the most consistent offensive weapon for the Horned Frogs throughout the season. She finished with a team-best 242 kills (2.66 kills/set) on .214 hitting while playing in all 26 matches. In conference play, Clark shined brightest. The sophomore posted 2.95 kills/set, ninth best in the Big 12, while setting a career-high with 21 kills in TCU's five-set victory over Texas Tech (Oct. 6). She would end up securing double-digit kills in 12 matches this season, just under half her total matches, and posting career-bests in kills (242), kills/set (2.66), assists (nine), aces (six) and points (284.5).
She embraced her role on the defensive side after being moved to middle blocker from her original position on the right side. In the 10 matches Clark played in the middle, she delivered 1.08 blocks/set, the ninth best mark in the conference. She delivered at least three blocks in nine of her 10 matches at MB including a career-best 7.0 blocks in TCU's 3-1 victory over Kansas (Nov. 9). She would finish the season with career-bests in blocks (70), blocks/set (0.77) and digs (40).
"Katie played a huge role on our team in many different capacities, "Kramer said. "She was a true utility player, stepping in at the right and left before settling-in as a middle-blocker. She developed a great connection with McKenzie in the middle and has a tremendous work ethic, which makes for a lethal combination. She's a true team player who is willing to do what it takes for our team to be successful."
Adams, a Plano HS product, announced her presence in the first weekend of the season, going off for 23 kills on .319 hitting. She would find her groove again later in the year, exploding for 76 kills over a five-match span in the final month of the regular season (Nov. 9 – Nov. 27). Her performance against Kansas on Nov. 9 stands as one of the most dominant performances by any Big 12 player this season as Adams delivered 23 kills on .500 hitting with 6.0 blocks for 26.5 points. She finished the season third on the team with 194 kills (2.52 kills/set) on .224 hitting, earning herself a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
"Julia got off to a strong start this season and continued to work to develop her physicality as our season progressed," Kramer said. "She brings some major heat from the left pin and has continued to develop her tool box as an outside hitter. She put forth great effort to learn how to terminate as an outside hitter in the Big 12 and his just getting started."
The Horned Frogs will participate in the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championships (NIVC). The first-round match against Miami (OH) will be at 3:30 p.n. (CT) on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Bowling Green, Ohio. It is the fourth postseason appearance for TCU in the last five years under Jill Kramer.
