TCU concludes season in tournament for fourth year in a row
TUCSON, Ariz. – A goal in the 63rd minute by Arizona was the difference maker as TCU fell by a 1-0 score in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Emily Alvarado stopped four of five shots that came her way. Yazmeen Ryan led all players with eight shots.
The Rundown
A very spirited first half concluded with a 0-0 score. Arizona held a slim 9-8 shot advantage, but it was the Horned Frogs that lead 4-3 in shots on goal. TCU generated three corner kicks in the half and all three were dangerous as Grace Collins was able to find Messiah Bright for a header.
Emily Alvarado had the save of the half as she made a leaping save on a high shot in the 34th minute.
The second started much the way the first half ended as both teams battled hard to get the first tally of the game. It was Arizona that finally capitalized in the 63rd minute. A loose ball bounced around inside the six-yard box. Brynn Moga eventually got a handle on the loose ball and sent a low shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
TCU didn't go quietly into the night as it continued to push. Yazmeen Ryan was off to the races in the 85th minute. She got free of her defender and pulled the goalkeeper out of position, but her shot clanged off the crossbar. The deflection bounced off a Wildcat defender, but that, too, hit off the crossbar and stayed out of the goal.
Stat of the Game
4 – Tara Smith, TCU's lone four-year senior, is the lone player to have appeared in all four tournament berths for the Horned Frogs.
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell
On the game:
"Congratulations to Arizona on progressing through the tournament. It was a well-fought game and I thought our kids represented themselves very well in the contest. Unfortunately we weren't able to come out with the result we were hoping for. That's how soccer goes sometimes."
On the offense:
"I think Arizona is a pretty good defending team. I thought they did well protecting the space in front of the backline and I thought when we were able to get behind them, we caused a lot of problems for them, but we didn't do it often enough."
On the future:
"The future is bright for us. I knew this was probably going to be a year where it was going to be a challenge for us to get back to this point and I'm proud of our group for doing that. I think we have a lot of players with a lot of big-game experience moving forward. Hopefully that will propel us to have a good year next season."
