Plano native Julia Adams hit 23 kills on .500 hitting with six blocks against Kansas
FORT WORTH -- Freshman outside hitter Julia Adams caps off the best performance of her career by being named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. These are Adams' first conference recognitions. She is the third Horned Frog to win Rookie of the Week and first to claim Offensive Player of the Week this season.
Adams earned the awards by turning in a masterful showing in TCU's 3-1 victory over Kansas. She finished with career-bests in kills (23), hitting percentage with 20+ attempts (.500), blocks (six) and points (26.5). Her 23 kills in four sets ranks fourth in the Big 12 this season, first among freshman, and she is the only player in the Big 12 this season to hit 20+ kills while maintaining a hitting percentage above .400 in a four-set match.
Her 26.5 points is tied for the sixth most points collected in a single match this season and tied for second in four-set matches. She is the only freshman in the Big 12 to earn more than 25 points in a match this season.
"Julia had a really strong outing against Kansas on Saturday and was very physical at the left pin," head coach Jill Kramer said. "She showed she is continuing to expand her range and her 'tool box' as an outside hitter. She's put a lot of effort into practice, shown a high level of purpose in her effort, and is trusting her training. It's always great to see our players learn and grow in the game, and to see their hard work pay off."
Adams joins fellow freshman Audrey Nalls (Sept. 16) and McKenzie Nichols (Oct. 7) as Big 12 Rookie of the Week recipients. TCU is the only team in the conference to have three different players win the award this year. It is the first time a Big 12 team has had three separate winners of the award in the same season, since Texas Tech in 2012.
Adams and the rest of the Horned Frogs take the court next on Wednesday evening, for a 5 p.m. (CT) match against West Virginia.
