TCU-SMU Postgame Quotes

TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
(Opening Statement)
"Got a lot of work to do. Keep working. Get L.J. Collier back next week. Hopefully Markell Simmons next week, couple wide receivers next week. Just gotta keep getting stronger, keep getting better. Obviously this is great. This is a Friday game, its 12:30 a.m. and the guys will get a chance to sleep in – the guys will, you and I won't. You know, I didn't order the rain. I did not. I would rather be in my own bed right now like you guys."
(On what the team did during the delay)
"We kind of anticipated the rain so we brought extra sandwiches, fruit and everything. I made sure, when they said we wouldn't start at 7 p.m., that we went and passed out extra because we ate pregame at 3 p.m., before we got on the bus. So, at 7 p.m. we ended up eating again. You kind of have to have a plan. Do the things you need to do."
TCU QB Shawn Robinson
(On his performance tonight)
"Feel alright. A lot of mistakes. Go watch the film tomorrow and do better."
(On his touchdown run)
"I thought I scored. I thought I got the ball over."
(On if the delay interfered with pregame preparation)
"I mean, possibly. It did a little bit. Guys are ready. It messed with our pregame routine."
SMU Head Coach Sonny Dykes
(On what was missing in the second half)
"Well we had a hard time converting some third downs. If you look, I think there were four series in a row where we had a holding penalty. They just absolutely killed us. Against a good defensive football team when you have holding penalties, repeatedly like we did over and over and over, it hurts you. And I thought we got behind the chains a bit and couldn't get in front of them. So that was problematic. I think, like I said, when you go back and look at the play-by-play, you're going to see a lot of drives with the first play holding, all of a sudden it's 1st and 20. We weren't good enough to overcome those."
(On how SMU generated a faster start)
"I think our guys were ready to play. I thought our players handled the delay well. I was really impressed with the way they came out and they were focused and had a lot of energy. I thought we got off to a good start. We had some misfortunate things happen along the way where we get the punt return that goes for 70 yards that gets called back. We were going to have the ball at the five yard line and instead we get it at our own 20. That was a really big play in the game. Didn't see the block in the back, but was disappointed in that. I thought when the ball was fumbled and kicked around there, I thought the ball went out at the 1-yard line and we got the safety instead. All of a sudden, those two plays go a little different and we have 21 points potentially. That hurt us. Those were two critical plays in the game that were really important. Then we had a run in the third quarter where I think we had a holding penalty on four or five straight drives."
(On whether he takes any solace in hanging with a good Big 12 team for a half)
"No. I mean, look, TCU is a really good football team but I'm disappointed we didn't play better in the second half. That's what I take away from the game. I talked to the players a little bit afterwards, the thing we've got to do is, we're just not very good at details right now and that's what's biting us in the rear end. We had way too many penalties today. The penalties, I thought, really hurt us. We're still not executing at the level we need to execute at on offense. TCU is a good defensive football team and they're going to put a lot of pressure on you. There's not going to be a lot of easy throws. They're going to match your routes pretty good. Reggie and CJ both went down early in the ball game and we just didn't make any plays really outside of some wide receiver positions. Again, you've got to give TCU some credit for that. We've got to be able to move the ball better than we did and score more points and I was disappointed in that. I thought we ran the ball much better against a good defensive front. I was impressed with our ability to run it. But we've got to be able to throw it better than we did."
SMU quarterback Ben Hicks
(On what they were doing scheme-wise to make life hard in the passing game)
"Kind of the same thing as last week. Played a lot of man. Made it hard for our guys to get off press coverage. They're just an all-around good defense. Coach Patterson's been coaching that defense for however long it's been, it's been a long time for those guys. Even the scheme. They do a great job of it, they're coached up well."
(On how hard it was to manage the delay and what they did for the couple hours they were in locker room)
"You just try to stay off your feet. Find something to occupy your mind so you're not going crazy. I got in the hot tub to relax a little bit. I think guys took naps, watched one of their shows or something. Try not to go crazy in there thinking about the game. I think Coach Kaz and the strength staff did a good job of keeping everybody calm and I thought we handled it pretty well."
(On what kind of adjustments they made at halftime)
"We run the ball well. Trying to find ways to continue to run the ball and then hit some stuff downfield. We just weren't able to hit too much stuff down the field tonight. Like I said, they're a good defense. They played well. We've just got to find a way to stay on the field and sustain some drives, keep our defense off the field. I think that's something we've done a poor job of the past two weeks. Not being able to sustain drives and keep our defense from wearing down. That's something we need to get better at and fix."
