FORT WORTH, Texas. – A strong second nine helped TCU move into a tie for ninth place after the opening round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational Sunday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.
A loaded field of 15 teams, including half of the top 10, ranked by Golfweek, took on the challenging course. Despite excellent conditions, with temperatures in the 70s, no team was able to shoot under par.
With a shotgun start, most of the Horned Frogs started on the back nine. TCU's top four golfers collectively shot 7-over on the back nine and then surged down the home stretch and shot 1-over on the front. Helping lower the team score late was Stefano Mazzoli, who had a stretch of three birdies over four holes and Triston Fisher, who birdied three of five holes.
Mazzoli also sank a 30-foot putt for an eagle on hole No. 1. He led the Frogs at even-par 70 and is tied for eighth. Fisher, a local product from Southlake, is tied for 19th at 1-over 71.
Vanderbilt's Mason Greenberg (-4) led the field and was one of seven to shoot under par. Vanderbilt leads the team standings at 1-over 281. The Frogs shot 8-over 288.
