TCU-Iowa State Postgame Quotes
9/29/2018 10:13:00 PM | Football
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the win over Iowa State:
"It was good to get a win tonight. There is nothing worse than going into an off week with a loss — nothing."
On the Big 12 Conference race:
"We only have to be one of the top two teams to play in the championship game, so we have to take it one game at a time. As I have watched things unfold, and I haven't had a chance to watch everyone play, you could have the first-place team with one or two losses and the second-place team could have three. Every week, whoever plays at home is going to have the advantage, and you have to be ready to go. It's going to be interesting, to say the least."
On the upcoming week:
"It gives you the opportunity to get people healthy. We're getting more rest. We won't practice Monday and Tuesday. We'll probably have a game plan practice on Thursday."
On the knee pads:
"Wear your pants long enough so they are over your knees. That's the rules. It's not like we haven't been talking to them about it. We've got to get longer pants I guess. We have a week and a half to do that."
TCU Running Back Sewo Olonilua
On his workload in the game:
"We knew we needed to set the tone with the run game and make it easy for Shawn (Robinson). We wanted to take some pressure off him."
On his success out of the Wildcat formation:
"We practiced that all week. They weren't setting the edge and I just ran."
On the TCU defense this year:
"They're playing great, they've had our back all season. This game, we finally paid them back."
On avenging last year's loss:
"We knew we had to play hard and get the win, especially being 2-2."
TCU Defensive End Ben Banogu
On his fumble recovery for a touchdown:
"It's a drill we practice every Sunday. Innis made a great play on the ball, and when the ball was on the ground I picked it up and ran it in."
"I was checking back to see if anyone was chasing me and making sure nobody was behind me. I think I almost pulled something because I was running so hard."
On being able to make his personal mark on tonight's game:
"It's always nice making a big play, but as long as I can do my one-eleventh and contribute to the team in whatever fashion that is, then I'm ok with it. We won the game today, and at the end of the day, you just want to get a 'W' on the board."
On playing in heavy defense games:
"Those games are fun because you know the best defense is going to win the game, and today we were the better defense. We're just glad that we could pull this one out, and now we are looking forward to the next game."
On the impact of having L.J. Collier back:
"L.J. is a dominant player, so any time you can get a piece like that back on the field, it opens up things for everyone else. He demands attention from the offensive line, so it's good to have him back."
On the defense responding to the offense's turnovers:
"That's part of football. The defense was asked to go out there and make a stop, and that's what we had to do."
On the upcoming bye week:
"We have to make sure we get in the weight room, get treatment, and make sure we are healthy going into (the week of the Texas Tech game). We also have to get better throughout the week. It is good to have an off week, but sometimes people don't take advantage of that off week. Coach Patterson puts a big emphasis on that, so I will be excited to work and get better."
TCU Wide Receiver Jalen Reagor
On getting the win vs. Iowa State:
"It shows who we are as a team and that we can respond to adversity."
On the physicality of the game:
"We knew what type of team Iowa State was because of last year. We know those guys play hard and they're a good team; it was going to be a hard-nosed football team. "
On the back-and-fourth of the game:
"We knew we weren't just going to walk in there and it just be a cake walk or visa-versa. We knew we just had to play and gel together."
On the game-winning drive:
"Finish. That's what Coach P emphasized all week. We played two great games, but we need to be a four-quarter ball club."
On the off-week:
"[It's coming at an] awesome time. We can refocus and get everybody back healthy."
On confidence in Mike Collins and other quarterbacks:
"I'm confident in all our quarterbacks. They practice hard, just like we do. It's all about repetition and Coach Cumbie has his guys ready."
On the defense:
"To keep it very honest, the defense has saved us at times. They do their part. We just need to make sure that we capitalize on our part. The defense has been playing great. They have constant stops. That's how you win football games. We just need to score touchdowns."
On student section:
"The student section is always great. Here [at TCU] it's very close knit. Everybody is here for us. Our fans, they love us; we're good."
On Taye Barber's touchdown:
"Y'all see him. Y'all see how Taye is. In spring when he got here, we knew. That's why coach makes play calls for him."
On Turpin's toughness:
"Y'all know Turp. He gets hit all the time. He's the smallest guy on the field and he always gets up. If it was up to him, we could play outside on the parking lot."
On personal goals:
"I want to be more about winning. As long as we're winning and I'm contributing. Of course, I have goals. I want to score touchdowns and lead the Big 12 in receiving, but as long as we're winning, I'm fine.
On upcoming games and Big 12 Title:
"We can play with anybody. You've seen how we played Ohio State and Texas, so we can play with anybody, we just have to gel.
On turnovers:
"It's football. Coach P always says it's the football gods. If you do the right thing, they pay you back. Honestly, just play hard. That's what we do."
TCU Linebacker Ty Summers
On blitzing during the second half:
"I mean not too much. We just wanted to play some pressure, get them out of their rhythm a little bit, or keep them off their rhythm I guess. Then after doing that we realized the base was doing his job, so we kind of stuck to it."
On Iowa State not throwing the ball:
"No, they weren't. They have great running backs. Like Montgomery and them, they just hand off to them in the middle, and he's going to make the first guy miss, unfortunately for us. We've just got to do a better job tackling. It was good to see that and have that exposed a little bit, that way we know what to fix going into this next game against Tech."
On playing without Arico Evans:
"My role didn't change. We have a lot of guys who can go out and fill those shoes, guys that are able to communicate just as well and that's the biggest part of our defense is communication. So with guys like Mark Hill stepping up and going in there, these guys play very well."
On Garrett Wallow:
"That dude just flies around and makes plays. He knows his job, and he does it at 110%, and that's something you've got to respect about the guy."
On the three-game series:
"Obviously, there are two blemishes on our record, so knowing that is frustrating because there are a lot of things we know we could have done better to make it zero. But it's done now, we've got to learn from those mistakes and build on it, especially going into this next series we have starting with Tech."
On playing at linebacker again:
"It felt good to be back at linebacker. Made way too many missed tackles, which is something Im going to have to work on, critique. From being in the box, you don't have that opportunity to go make open field tackles, so I've got to fix that personally. But it felt a lot better to be back there into a position that I've done."
On tackling to the ground:
"It's just something you need to make a conscious effort on. Going against a scout team and such. Obviously, we can't take those guys to the ground, but practicing tackling them correctly, and don't slack off like players tend to do sometimes. They don't feel like hitting sometimes, they'll slack off and just hit their shoulder. Something I was trying to emphasize this week and I'm gonna continue to emphasize was wrapping guys up, because I was struggling with that today. I'm gonna continue to build on that starting Tuesday."
On having a takeaway for the first time in three games:
"My heart was racing, I had an adrenaline rush, I feel like I should have caught him myself. When stuff like that happens, it is a huge momentum swing."
On having to make a big stop with under a minute to go:
"That's what you go do every Colorado, circuit and spring for. Every practice you have, and spring ball, and two-a-days, are for the moments like that where your backs to the wall but you know what to do to win and you go out there and do it. Because that feeling is something that all the other work is for. It felt really good to have that opportunity, and to ultimately have the win because of it."
Iowa State Coach Matt Campbell
On the game in general:
"First and foremost, I'll give credit to TCU. Game of inches and ultimately they came in and were able to win the inch at the end."
"I thought there was a lot of growth and a lot of improvement in areas that we need to continue to improve in, and I'm really proud of our guys and I look forward to our next opportunity."
On their early fumble:
"Big play. I think Zeb pulled it down and it was an RPO and he had a shot down the field and I think the ball just slipped out of his hand. It was one of those situations where it's inches. The reality of it is, we're not where we're at in that football game without Zeb's big response. My most pride is how Zeb responded and gave us a chance to go right down the football field. That third down play was huge, and I think it was a huge confidence booster for him going forward."
On what is missing in their offense:
"I think a little bit of it is flow. We saw some improvement in the red zone and we're better on third down, and situationally I think it's just finding a flow. It was a hard first half to find a flow offensively because we didn't have the ball very much. I think the numbers tonight are a little bit misleading due to that. I saw us run the football and we haven't done that here in a long time. I saw Zeb step up and make some good plays. I'm not super concerned about it. I think we'll only continue to grow and get better."
On their defense:
"I think it was another great effort by the defense. I think the thing that was missing was our ability to get off the field on third down, and that was probably as much as the fumble with the opening in the second half. I thought defensively, I couldn't ask much more from our kids. Their effort, their intent, what they're doing, I'm really proud of them. I don't sit here disheartened."
On David Montgomery:
"I am a little concerned about David. There's no player that would want to be on the field more than that guy. We're just going to have to play it day by day and see what it is."
On the missed opportunity with such a close game:
"I don't feel that way. Our opportunity is in terms of the end of the season and we can look back and say, where are we? Quite honestly, we're inches away in every game we play. For us and this team, this group, it's all about our response to some tough situations. A lot of people write us off and that's okay, but I really enjoy this team. It's one of the hardest working group of kids I've ever been around, and I really look forward to getting back to work with them. We'll be defined by the end of the season, not four games in."
On how to get on the right side of the inch marks:
"Process. We've talked about it since day one here, and you've got to perfect your process and it's not easy, especially when you play some great opponents like we get the opportunity to do.
On other player options with David Montgomery out:
"There's a lot of guys who have been waiting on their opportunity, so I feel really confident in that room. It's one of the best rooms in the country in that position so we'll just wait and see where we're at."
On Will McDonald and younger guys:
"I think a lot of our young guys played a really good football game tonight. A lot of guys came up in some critical moments. I thought our punting game was much improved. Will McDonald, freshman coming in and he's been really talented. I know we've all been really confident about what he is and what he brings to the table."
On their 78-yard touchdown drive:
"We rushed for 100 yards tonight and in a lot of ways, I think the productivity with that line is really growing. What we've asked that line to do is continue to be the final product of this football program. If they can continue to grow with us, we'll continue to grow as a program and as a football team."
On their 79 yards passing:
"They played tight coverage, and you gotta either make the play or try to get a DPI and I thought we were able to get some of that out of it. The amount of possessions in the football game make that number a little bit skewed and tough. Give credit to their kids, they've got a really good defensive back field."
Iowa State Wide Receiver Hakeem Butler
On the confidence that Iowa State will bounce back:
"I'm extremely confident. I know me. I know these coaches. I know these players. I know everybody in that locker room. I know we have the best coaches in the country and the best players. We are going to be okay."
On the offense:
"There were some dropped balls here and there. It's really just on us. It's a game of inches and they got a little bit more than we did."
On the Iowa State running backs:
"We have the best players in the country to me. From Johnny (Lang) and Sheldon (Croney Jr.) and Mike Warren. Everyone has proven themselves to me. I know what they can do. David is dog, he can come back and be ready."
Iowa State Quarterback Zeb Noland
On the fumble:
"Things happen in the game sometimes. We just have to bounce back and let it go and keep working."
On the defense:
"I told you guys they first game that they are absolutely phenomenal. They do a great job. Coach (Jon Heacock) does a great job with those guys. They come to work every single guy and work hard. We know that we can trust them. We've just got to continue to keep trusting those guys and make it easy for them."
On the third and 25:
"I don't break out of the pocket much. I just went for it. I knew we had to have a first down. I was going to do whatever we needed to do to get it."
On the missed opportunity:
"I don't think it's a missed opportunity. I think it's another learning lesson for this team. We graduated a lot of seniors last year that had to learn a lot of lessons their first year as a unit. I just feel like we need to keep bounding back and not give up on each other. At the end of the day, that's what it's about to us. Like I said we have full faith in our defense and they trust us too."
On if it's touch staying the course with the loss:
"I think it's great motivation, especially if when you lose kind of like we did tonight. We can execute better and that's going to be our driving force for next week. We've just got to put this behind us tomorrow and go to work for Okie State."
On the win over Iowa State:
"It was good to get a win tonight. There is nothing worse than going into an off week with a loss — nothing."
On the Big 12 Conference race:
"We only have to be one of the top two teams to play in the championship game, so we have to take it one game at a time.
