FORT WORTH – Former TCU baseball player Andrew Mitchell has been recognized by the LEAD1 Association as one of its Top 25 Congressional Staff Student-Athletes. He will be honored at the Congressional Luncheon on Sept. 26 at the LEAD1 annual meeting in Washington.
"This is what it is all about! I am so excited for Andrew, but not surprised at all," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "He exemplifies everything we want our program to be about and there is no doubt that he will continue to be a tremendous success."
Mitchell was a three-year letterwinner at TCU from 2011-13. He was named a 2011 Freshman All-American in addition to earning first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors as a sophomore in 2012. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox.
Over the course of his career, Mitchell amassed a 12-6 record in 59 appearances. He put up a 3.34 ERA in 202 innings of work and recorded 231 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .208 batting average.
Mitchell currently works as a legislative assistant with Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who is serving his third term in the senate. He serves as the Majority Whip, the second-highest ranking position in the Senate Republican Conference.
Congressional offices were surveyed for nominations and top selections were made by current and former leaders in Congress who were college student-athletes. The contest was open to candidates of all NCAA divisions as well as all Congressional staff positions.
For the second consecutive year, athletics directors from the Association and various members of Congress who represent LEAD1 institutions will meet on Capitol Hill for a Congressional Luncheon. Last year, the Association honored 50-plus members of Congress who were former student-athletes.
