The Rundown
Nick Lodolo (6-3) was masterful in his 7 1/3 innings on the mound. He allowed just five hits, walked two and struck out 10. Cal Coughlin came on with a runner on first and one out in the eighth and retired five of the six batters he faced to record his first career save.
Josh Watson got the scoring started with a two-out solo home run in the third inning. It was his seventh home run of the season.
Lamar had base runners in every inning but one, but each time Lodolo was able to leave them stranded. The biggest threat came in the sixth when the Cardinals had two in scoring position with two outs. Lodolo's eighth strikeout out of the game kept the TCU lead intact.
The Frogs gave themselves some breathing room with a run in the seventh. Zach Humphreys was hit by a one-out pitch. Following a Connor Wanhanen base hit, Coby Boulware delivered a base hit to right to drive in Humphreys for a 2-0 lead.
In the eighth, Coughlin helped keep the Cardinals off the board. He entered with a runner on second and one out. After taking care of a hopper to the mound, he fanned the clean-up hitter to strand the runner at second. In the ninth, a lead-off single was stranded.
