AUSTIN, Texas – Texas used a five run fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 7-3 win over TCU on Saturday afternoon. Conner Shepherd and Johnny Rizer each homered for the Horned Frogs.
The Rundown
Texas opened the scoring in the first on a one out, two run home run from Kody Clemens.
TCU cut the Longhorn lead in half in the third inning. Conner Shepherd led off the frame with his seventh home run of the season. In the fourth, Shepherd's two-out single tied the game at two.
Disaster struck in the fourth as Texas sent nine men to the plate and scored five times. Two batters into the inning, the Longhorns had the lead. The big blow was a two-run double from Duke Ellis to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
TCU had its chances to get back in the game. Back-to-back singles from Colton Parrish and Coby Boulware opened the seventh. A one-out walk to A.J. Balta loaded the bases, but the Longhorns turned their second double play of the game to end the inning without any runs scoring.
Johnny Rizer opened the eighth with his third home run of the game, but that would be all for the Frogs on Saturday.
The pitching trio of Austin Boyles, Russell Smith and Cal Coughlin turned in three scoreless frames. They combined to allow just two hits and struck out five.
