The Rundown
UT Arlington opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the Frogs wasted little time getting back into the game. TCU sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times.
Back-to-back singles from Colton Parrish and Josh Watson followed by a walk to Luken Baker loaded the bases with nobody out. A.J. Balta walked to tie the game and Michael Landestoy followed with a base hit to give the Frogs a lead. Johnny Rizer singled to push the lead to 3-1 and an RBI groundout from Adam Oviedo made it 4-1.
Two more runs came around to score in the second. Parrish again led off the inning with a base hit. Watson hit a missile down the right field line for a stand-up triple and a 5-1 lead. Landestoy's two-out single plated Watson for a 6-1 advantage.
UTA picked up a run in the fifth, once again taking advantage of a free pass to start the frame. After a dropped fly ball put two in scoring position with one out, Caleb Sloan (1-0) worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to limit the damage to one.
In the eighth, a trio of miscues helped the Mavericks pull within one, 6-5. With two in scoring position on an error and a double, Josh Minjarez made it a 6-3 game. Christian Hollie doubled with two outs to pull the Mavericks within two. A pair of errors gifted UTA another run. Augie Mihlbauer came on and got a fly out to end the inning with the tying run on second.
Russell Smith allowed just one run on five hits over four innings of work. He struck out three and walked two in the no-decision. Sloan picked up the win in relief after allowing a run on one hit.
