PHOENIX – Following an interception by Jawuan Johnson on Cal's possession in the first overtime, Jonathan Song hit a 27-yard field goal to lift TCU to a 10-7 victory in the Cheez-It Bowl at Chase Field on Wednesday.
Sewo Olonilua ran for a TCU bowl record 194 yards on a career-high 32 carries to earn Cheez-It Bowl Offensive MVP honors in a game that was a defensive slugfest, featuring a combined nine interceptions.
The Horned Frogs had five of those interceptions from five different players, tying for the single-game high in head coach Gary Patterson's tenure.
Cal scored first on a 4-yard touchdown by Chase Garbers in the first quarter but picks by Julius Lewis, Niko Small and Jeff Gladney kept the deficit to a minimum heading into the locker room at halftime.
TCU got on the scoreboard with three seconds remaining in the third quarter when Olonilua powered his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line to tie the game and set up Song's game-winner in overtime.
The victory gives the Frogs a winning record for the 15th time in Patterson's 18 years as head coach at TCU as they finish the 2018 campaign at 7-6.
