Nembhard wins dunk contest, Bane wins 3-point competition
FORT WORTH, Texas – Alex Robinson's made shot from half court capped the 2nd Annual Frog Army Scrimmage Friday at Schollmaier Arena.
As was the case in the inaugural event last season, the Frog Army Scrimmage ended with three students choosing three TCU men's basketball players to shoot from half court on their behalf. A made shot would win the student $1,000 from head coach Jamie Dixon.
Desmond Bane, RJ Nembhard and Alex Robinson were the chosen three. After initial misses by each, they all shot again with Robinson's shot coming while seated at midcourt. After more misfires, other players tried their luck. Finally, a word of advice came to Alex Robinson from behind the TCU bench.
"My dad just told me 'hey, you've been doing that shot your whole life, just sit down and shoot it. I know you missed the first one. Just sit down and shoot it and it's going to go in.'"
The advice from his father, Anthony Bowler, paid off for Robinson and paid Will Dalgarn $1,000. Dixon signed a check at mid-court and presented it to the freshman from Pasadena, Calif.
"That felt great," said Robinson. "My last year. My last purple and white scrimmage. I didn't get a trophy, so that was my trophy, getting somebody $1,000. That's a blessing right there. I know that kid is happy and I'm happy for him."
Those that did get a trophy were 3-point champion RJ Nembhard and slam dunk champion Desmond Bane. Prior to the contests, Nembhard scored 18 points to lead all players in a scrimmage that was two 20-minute halves in length. Nembhard's 18 wasn't enough for his purple team which fell to the white team 48-44. Bane had 12 points to lead white and Robinson and redshirt freshman Kevin Samuel each added 11 points. Freshman Kaden Archie rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points for purple.
"I think a lot of people after tonight are going to be really excited about TCU basketball," said Robinson.
The No. 20 Horned Frogs open the season against CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. Season tickets are sold out for the season, but non-conference single-game tickets go on sale Saturday.
