EUGENE, Ore. -- The Horned Frogs wrapped up competition at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and junior Scotty Newton secured Second-Team All-America honors in the triple jump at Historic Hayward Field on Friday.
Newton, who already garnered All-America accolades in the long jump earlier this week, doubled down and repeated his performance in his signature event on a brisk afternoon in Eugene, Ore. The junior found himself near the bottom half of the performance list after his first two attempts, but in similar fashion to Wednesday's effort, Newton saved his best jump for last.
The Bakersfield, Calif., native jumped a distance of 52 feet 0.5 inches (15.86 meters) and moved to ninth place. However, his spot in the finals was pushed back after Oklahoma's Hayden McClain leaped to the top nine on his last jump. Newton finished 10th overall.
Newton is now a three-time All-American after his performance at this year's NCAA Championships.
