OKLAHOMA CITY – Brian Howard put together a career-night on the mound as he tossed a complete-game shutout with a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead No. 6 TCU to a 6-0 win over Kansas.
The Rundown
Howard (9-3) was brilliant in leading the Horned Frogs to victory. The senior allowed just four hits and just seven base runners on the night. No Jayhawk made it past second base. After allowing a pair of singles to open the fourth inning, he retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced.
The TCU offense stacked Howard to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. A trio of walks to open the inning for the Frogs set the table for the big inning. With one out, Nolan Brown bounced a single through the left side for a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Ryan Merrill doubled the advantage with a two-run single of his own.
Kansas got a lead-off double in the third, but a pair of strikeouts and a ground out stranded the runner on second. After two singles opened the fourth for the Jayhawks, Howard struck out the side to leave them on base.
Connor Wanhanen spurred a two-run fourth inning with a one-out triple to left center. After a walk to Austen Wade, he scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 game. Wade tagged up on a fly ball off the bat of Zach Humphreys and scored the final run of the game on a balk.
