FORT WORTH, Texas -- Riding a 10-match winning streak, the No. 9 TCU men's tennis team will go for the Big 12 regular season crown as they head to Waco, Texas to face No. 4 Baylor on Wednesday, April 19.
The Horned Frogs (15-4, 3-0 Big 12) and the Bears (21-4, 2-1 Big 12) will square off at 6 p.m., at the Hurd Tennis Center. The TCU women's tennis team will also be on hand as they face Baylor at 4 p.m.
TCU Notables
After starting the season 2-2, TCU has won 13 of its last 15 matches including a victory in the last 10 straight matches. Last week, the Frogs continued their streak of sweeping opponents with 4-0 victories over No. 26 USF and No. 44 Texas Tech. TCU remains undefeated in Big 12 action and a win over Baylor will secure at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title for the second straight season.
Cameron Norrie moved up to No. 2 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles poll to lead TCU and is 14-1 on the season and 12-1 against ranked opponents. Alex Rybakov checks in at No. 27 and is riding a team-best 15-match winning streak in singles action with seven wins over ranked foes. Guillermo Nuñez rounds out the singles rankings at No. 83 with 15 wins this season.
In doubles action, TCU has won the doubles point in 16 matches this season and has four ranked doubles teams. Nuñez and Rybakov lead the way at No. 32 with a team-best 13 wins this season. Trevor Johnson and Reese Stalder, who have been ranked every week this season, sit at No. 33 while Stalder and Jerry Lopez are ranked No. 34. Lopez rounds out the final ranking with Norrie at No. 40.
Scouting the Bears
Baylor enters the match with 21 wins this season and only one loss in conference action with a 4-3 loss to Oklahoma State. Last time out, the Bears took a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Texas and have secured a win in eight of their last nine matches. Juan Benitez sits at No. 13 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll with a 16-5 mark at the top position and 10 wins over ranked opponents. Max Tchoutakian is ranked No. 43 with a team-best 26 wins, while reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Johannes Schretter is ranked No. 53. Baylor also has three ranked doubles teams with Benitez pairing up with Will Little for a team-best ranked of No. 17.
All-Time Series Records
TCU and Baylor will be meeting up for the 54 th time in program history and the seventh time since becoming conference foes in 2012. The Frogs hold the overall advantage in the series record at 33-20 and picked up the win last year in Fort Worth. Before that, Baylor had won 16 straight meetings dating back to 2002. In matches played in Waco, the Bears hold the slight advantage at 12-11 with TCU last picking up a win at the Hurd Tennis Center in 1997.
