FORT WORTH, Texas -- Sophomore Fellan McGuigan and freshman Ryan Camp posted regional-qualifying marks as they breezed to victories in the hammer throw and discus on the first day of the TCU Invitational at the Lowdon Track & Field Complex on Friday.
"Today was a good start to the meet and the outdoor season overall," said director of track and field Darryl Anderson.
McGuigan, a native of London, England, opened the outdoor season with a winning-mark of 201 feet 11 inches (61.54 meters) in the hammer throw. All of McGuigan's efforts surpassed the 60-meter mark as he won the event by over 20 feet.
Camp, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., produced a first-place mark of 176 feet 6 inches (53.80 meters) in his first outdoor meet as a Horned Frog. The freshman's distance led the field by more than three feet and moved him to No. 5 on TCU's all-time list.
Also taking home a win for TCU was junior Paola Miranda. The Asuncion, Paraguay native threw a distance of 189 feet 2 inches (57.65 meters) on her second attempt in the hammer throw. Her effort went on to secure a victory by more than 23 feet.
The Frogs will return to their home track on Saturday beginning at 12:45 p.m. with the pole vault. Running events are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay, and the meet will conclude at 5:15 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
