FORT WORTH – The No. 1-ranked TCU women's rifle team continued its magical season with another victory to open the second half of the season. The Horned Frogs fired a 4,705 en route to finishing first over Ohio State and Coast Guard.
The Buckeyes fired a 4,698 to finish second followed by a 4,487 by the Coast Guard. TCU tied its ninth-best smallbore score, shooting a 2,336 for a three-point victory over Ohio State. It added a 2,369 in air rifle to push itself over the 4,700 threshold for the ninth time this season.
Despite the absence of top shooter Mindy Miles who is competing for USA Shooting at the Meyton Cup in Innsbruck, Austria and the Bavarian Match in Munich, Germany, the Frogs didn't miss a beat.
The quintet of Rachel Garner, Ariana Grabowski, Nicole Hankey, Salli Li and Casey Lutz turned in four of the top six smallbore scores. Grabowski fired a 586 to finish second followed closely by Garner's 585 which placed her third. Lutz finished fifth with a 583 and Hankey sixth with a season-best 582.
In air rifle, Garner, Hankey, Li and Lutz were joined by Catherine Miller as counters. TCU produced four of the top five scores. Li was the Frogs' top shooter, firing a 594 for a second place finish. Lutz and Hankey finished third and fourth, respectively, after shooting identical parks of 592. Rounding out the top five was Garner who fired a 591.
Ohio State's Drew Cheezum and Michael Steinel were the match's top shooters with identical aggregate scores of 1,179. Garner was the Frogs' top aggregate score with a 1,176 for a third place finish.
TCU will return to the firing range on Feb. 4 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio for the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships. TCU will attempt to defend its first-ever title won last season.
