
Rifle Opens Campaign At The Citadel

FORT WORTH – The TCU Women's Rifle team kicks off action in the 2016-17 season Saturday at The Citadel. The Horned Frogs, ranked No. 3 in the CRCA preseason poll, return nine letterwinners from the 2015-16 season.
Last season's group finished second at the NCAA Championships, losing out on their third national title by just five points to West Virginia. Four of the five members, Rachel Garner, Nicole Hankey, Sally Li and Mindy Miles, who shot at the championships return this season. The group combined to earn eight All-America honors at the end of the season. Additionally, TCU welcomed four talented newcomers in the fall.
TCU's top three air rifle shooters return. Miles led the crew with a 594 average last year. Li and Hankey also averaged over 590 in air rifle at 591 for the season.
In smallbore, two of the top three shooters return. Garner paced all shooters with an average of 583. Li ranked third on the team with a 580 smallbore average.
As a team, TCU turned in one of its best seasons in school history, boasting a match average of 4,695.
The Citadel opened its season last week at VMI. The Bulldogs' co-ed team finished second with 4,459 points. The Citadel women's team took fourth in the competition utilizing a lineup of three sophomores and two newcomers.
Junior Morgan Long leads The Citadel back into competition after winning air rifle with 577 points anda second-place, 556-point performance in smallbore, claiming the top overall aggregate score of 1,113. Sophomore Allison Auten turned in a top-five finish for the Bulldogs by taking fifth in smallbore and placed 12th in air rifle.
The match will begin at 7:45 a.m. (CT) and consist of two relays on each discipline. Live stats will be available on CitadelSports.com.
