FORT WORTH, Texas - Brandon Parrish gives fans an inside look at his study abroad to South Africa to learn about conservation and much more.
Parrish is currently in South Africa with 10 other TCU students, focusing on rhinos, conservation and biodiversity. The senior, who will travel to Cape Town, Johannesburg and the Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa, has been kind enough to share his experiences with the Horned Frog community and will continue to do so throughout the remainder of his trip.

Man oh man. What an experience this has been so far. The first 36 hours of travel was BRUTAL. The seats were pretty tight, but making it here was well worth the wait!
The first day we went to go see the housing situation in Soweto. The fact that the wealthy, sub par and undesirables were all within about a 2 to 3 mile radius was really eye opening. The undesirables lived in shacks without any plumbing or electricity. They had a hole in the ground for a toilet. In that moment, I realized that any problems that I would ever have wouldn't be equivalent to what they have to go through. Whenever I think I've got it bad, I'll have them to think about.
The rest of the day we used to learn about Nelson Mandela. What a guy. He has multiple statues that stand 25 plus feet high and I can't think of anyone else who is deserving of such statues. You've gotta have nothing but respect for him and the people of South Africa because from the beginning all they've done is FIGHT! They fight for equality, fight to survive, but above all they continue to fight for a better future.
Today we went to view the cradle of mankind, a cave and very informative museum about the origins of mankind and how we've evolved into the prime species that we are over millions of years. The best part of it all came when I walked out the museum and saw the landscape. Miles and miles of hills and natural land that in America you'll have to go to a national park to see. I literally spent 5 minutes starring in awe and gazing at the pixel perfect view. I don't even have the words to explain it, but in that moment I felt at one with the world and what it really looks like when it's untouched.
Tomorrow we fly to Cape Town, but Johannesburg has been everything I could've imagined. I'll be glad to fill you guys in when I get there. Talk to you soon.
P.S. Missing the fellas and the rest of the #FrogFam! 😈🐸
