WICHITA, Kan. – Three runs in the middle innings was all No. 6 TCU needed as it blanked Wichita State, 3-0, in the series opener on Friday. Dane Steinhagen hit his third home run of the season.
The Rundown
Pitching and defense dominated the early portion of the game. Wichita State turned a pair of double plays in the first four innings to erase TCU threats. Luken Baker pitched around a pair of base runners in the third and got a double play of his own to end the fourth.
Dane Steinhagen broke the deadlock with one out in the fifth. He lined a single over the right center field fence to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
Wichita State looked poised to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as it loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk with nobody out. Evan Skoug made a sparkling play to corral a chopper and stepped on home for the first out. Jared Janczak (4-1) looked like he may escape with a double play ball, but the relay from second never came, however the umpire called interference on the runner and the inning was over without a run scoring.
In the sixth, Skoug was standing on third with two outs. The Shockers pitched around Elliott Barzilli and elected to pitch to Josh Watson. The freshman made the decision come back to haunt the Shockers as he lined a triple over the leaping second baseman to make it a 3-0 game.
Janczak made the lead stand up. He pitched five scoreless frames in relief of Baker. He allowed just two hits, walked two and fanned nine to earn his fourth win of the season.
