FORT WORTH – TCU struck four times in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-2 victory over Gonzaga, evening the weekend series at a game apiece.
The Rundown
Two walks around a Cam Warner base hit loaded the bases with nobody out for the Horned Frogs in the first inning. Luken Baker put the Frogs on top with a bouncer up the middle that plated two runs. Elliott Barzilli hit a sacrifice fly and Ryan Merrill contributed a two-out hit to give TCU an early 4-0 lead.
The teams traded runs in the second as both took advantage of a lead-off double. Tyler Frost drove in the Zags first run of the game, while Dane Steinhagen scored on a double play ball in the bottom of the frame.
Barzilli's two-out single in the third inning pushed the lead to 6-1 as Evan Skoug scored after leading off the inning with a walk.
The Bulldogs crept within four in the fourth on two-out hit from Frost, but TCU got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-double from Skoug.
In full control with a 7-1 lead heading to the sixth, TCU once again found some two-out magic. With the bases loaded, Baker hit a hotshot at the third baseman to bring home another run. Josh Watson capped the game's scoring with a two-run home run in the eighth.
Brian Howard (3-0) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings of work. He finished with three walks and six strikeouts. Drew Gooch closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Stat of the Game
8 – TCU has hit eight home runs in the first 10 games of the season. The Frogs didn't collect their eighth home run until game No. 22 on March 24 last year.
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle
"Obviously, getting four runs in the first inning took some pressure off. I thought we were consistent with our approach the first half of the game. Overall, it was a team effort and a team win."
"(Brian) Howard really struggled to find a rhythm, but he made pitches when he had too. His best pitching was really at the end and that's a really good sign for us because the big question with him is his endurance. It was good to see (Drew) Gooch. That's the best he's thrown since he's been at TCU."
"It's a learning experience for (Brian) Howard. He gave us a chance to win without his best stuff and he was able to stay in the game. He didn't fold and limited the damage and got better as the game went along."
