FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU returns to the links tomorrow at the eighth-annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate presented by Cleveland Golf, at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
The event, hosted by Wyoming, includes 20 teams and 15 individuals at the three-day event. All three days will consist of 18 holes that will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT. Following qualifying, TCU head coach Bill Montigel will send senior Paul Barjon, junior Chelso Barrett, senior Sarosh Adi, freshman Pierre Mazier and freshman newcomer Stefano Mazzoli. Junior Giulio Castagnara will compete as an individual.
The 2016 Desert Intercollegiate field will include Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Colorado, Old Dominion, Cal Poly, Idaho, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State, UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, UT-Arlington, Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver and Southern Illinois.
In their most recent outing, three TCU golfers finished in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard as TCU finished 8th in a strong field at 25th annual Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Waikoloa Kings' Course. With an 8th place finish at 13-under par, the Frogs posted better scores than three teams ranked in the top 40 nationally, including top-ranked Auburn -- who finished three-under par for the tournament. It was the third consecutive tournament that TCU finished under par for an event after not recoding the mark in the opening two events of the fall. The three-tournament span includes a tournament title at the Connecticut Cup to close out the fall season.
Castagnara posted his highest finish of the season with a 13th place finish in Hawaii after posting three scores at par or better in the inaugural spring contest of 2016 for the Frogs. Castagnara shot 72-67-72 to match the three rounds at par or better he had during the fall season and best his previous top finish of 24th in a fall tournament. Barjon and Mazzoli also posted top 20 finishes for the Frogs after ending the tournament with a four-under par mark for the tournament. Barjon posted his third top 20 finish of the 2015-16 calendar year while Mazzoli posted the top 20 finish in his TCU debut after joining the squad during the semester break. Barjon shot 71 on the final day of play in Hawaii while Mazzoli shot 68, his best round as Frog, that included a pair of eagles.
